Move Your Pet To Maui: 7 Need to Know Steps!

Let’s face it, moving can be a stressful enough. So we’re here to help! When you move your pet to Maui, it requires careful planning and preparation to ensure a smooth and stress-free experience for both you and your pet. Whether you’re moving to a Wailuku home or a dog friendly condo in Kihei, having a clear plan for getting your beloved pet there safely makes all the difference. Here are the specific steps you should take to avoid putting your dog through a 120 day quarantine period.

Check Maui’s Rigorous Pet Import Requirements

These regulations include various vaccinations, health certificates, and the quarantine guidelines. Go to the State of Hawaii Animal Industry Website for the most up-to-date information. In order to bypass the 120 day quarantine, you’ll need to apply for direct airport release. You’ll need to start this process 6 months in advance of arriving on Maui.

Visit Your Veterinarian: Microchip & Vaccination For Rabies

Make sure to schedule the visit with your vet well in advance prior to your trip to Maui. Ensuring your dog is up to date on all required vaccinations, including rabies, is mandatory for pet travel to Maui. Hawaii is the only state in the US not to have rabies and we aim to keep it that way. Your dog will need to have a minimum of 2 rabies vaccinations in their lifetime, and their most recent rabies vaccination must be active and verifiable via a blood test before they arrive on Maui. Your dog’s blood samples will then be mailed to the lab, and the lab will send the results directly to the department of agriculture in Hawaii. You will need to get a vaccine certificate from your veterinarian which certifies the date they gave the vaccine, and submit this information to the Hawaii department of agriculture.

Hire Local Maui Vet & Apply For An Inspection Permit

Before you apply for a permit, you need to hire a veterinarian inspector on Maui to greet you at the airport and give your animal clearance. Make sure you also book your flight with an airline that participates in the direct airport release program.

Get An Approved Travel Crate For Your Pet

Purchase a sturdy, airline-approved crate that provides sufficient space for your dog to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably. It should also have proper ventilation and secure locks. Ensure that the crate meets the specific requirements set by the airline you’ll be using. Some airlines have restrictions on pet travel, so verify their pet policies and make a reservation for your dog as soon as possible. Direct flights are also less stressful for your dog, so try to find a direct flight if one is available.

Prepare Your Dog For Travel

Help your dog acclimate to the travel crate by gradually introducing it and allowing them to spend time inside. Place familiar bedding, toys, and treats in the crate to make it more comfortable and familiar.

Pack Essentials

Pack essential items for your dog, including enough food, water, and any medications they may require during the journey. Bring collapsible bowls for food and water, waste bags, and a leash. Carry a recent photograph of your dog in case it gets lost.

Arrival In Maui

Upon arrival in Maui, you will need to follow the necessary procedures to clear your dog through the direct airport release program. Be prepared to present all required documentation, and comply with any additional inspections or procedures. Assuming that all goes well, congratulations! You’re free to enjoy all that our island has to offer. From the incredible Wailea oceanfront boardwalk to some of the best dog parks on Maui, there’s no shortage of adventure available.
