With some of the most nutrient rich volcanic soil in the world, Maui is known for its stellar produce. Tropical fruits are plentiful. Bounties from the sea and land, numerous. On this island, we are blessed with tremendous locally grown flavors. So skip Walmart or Target, and visit these local health food stores instead!
These four are known for their selection of fresh, locally sourced offerings. I’ve included something that I love about each spot. A special reason that makes them stand out among the rest!
Mana Foods — Best Overall Value
Located in Paia town, adjacent to our Coldwell Banker Office, Mana Foods is the most popular health food store on the North Shore of Maui, offering a wide variety of organic and locally sourced produce.
They prioritize offering high-quality, non-GMO, and environmentally friendly options to their customers. This commitment to organic and natural products sets them apart from conventional grocery stores, such as Safeway and Foodland.
Mana Foods also features a wonderful hot food bar and salad bar. Their fresh spring rolls might be my favorite on the island!
Down to Earth Organic & Natural — Best Food To-Go
With its convenient Central Maui location, close to Down to Earth is a well-known health food store on Maui. They have a wide range of organic produce, including locally grown fruits and vegetables. Down to Earth supports local farmers and producers by prominently featuring their products right as you enter the store.
By sourcing locally, the store helps strengthen the local economy and reduce the carbon footprint associated with long-distance transportation. It also creates a sense of community by fostering connections between consumers and local farmers. Because of this, Down to Earth probably has the best salad bar on the island! One thing I’d like to point out is that there are no meat options at Down to Earth, it’s strictly a vegetarian establishment.
Hawaiian Moons Natural Foods — Best Variety Of Local Produce
Situated in South Maui, near such Kihei condos as the Royal Mauian, Kamaole Beach Royale and Kihei Ali’i Kai is Hawaiian Moons Natural Foods. This shop is another great option for fresh produce. They offer a selection of organic and locally sourced fruits, vegetables, and herbs.
The store was originally established in 1994 as the first full service natural food store in the Kihei/Wailea area. From its inception, Hawaiian Moons has been promoting healthy foods, good fitness and a sustainable lifestyle for their customers. They also have a fantastic juice bar and natural supplements selection.
Alive & Well Natural Health Emporium — Best In-House Restaurant
Located in Central Maui and Kahului ton, Alive and Well is so much more than a health food store! About half of the store is dedicated to supplements with an extremely attentive staff who are incredibly knowledgeable on natural and organic remedies.
They have a smaller selection of fresh produce, including organic fruits and vegetables as well as a restaurant, Broth Cafe, which is more than worth checking out. Their fresh pressed juices, bright, lively smoothies, as well as wholesome grains and greens bowls have become a staple when eating out in Kahului town.
Whole Foods Market — Best Selection Of Fresh Fish & Meat
Whole Foods Market typically carries a variety of organic options, such as fruits, vegetables, grains, snacks, beverages, and personal care products. They also have by far the best meat selection out of anyone on this list as well.
You can find an assortment of locally raised, organic beef and pork, along side a wide variety of fresh island fish. The prepared food selection also rivals any establishment on island, with the olive bar being particularly noteworthy for its variety. While the prices are high, the quality certainly matches. And hey, it’s not affectionately called “Whole Paycheck” for nothing!
