Paia Bay Coffee and Bar (PBCB) is a cafe and bar located in Paia, a town on the North Shore of Maui, Hawaii. Upon opening, they quickly became a favorite between locals and visitors alike. We even featured them in our “Top 3 Happy Hour Destinations in Paia” list just recently. They offer a variety of coffee drinks, smoothies, sandwiches, salads, and other light fare, as well as alcoholic beverages, including beer, wine, and cocktails. The original cafe featured indoor and outdoor seating in a secluded courtyard with a casual, laid-back atmosphere that reflected the relaxed vibe of Paia town. So when they announced they would be taking over the larger space previously occupied by (the seriously under-whelming) Dollie’s and Rock ‘n Brews, there was much excitement in our community!

As the last half of this cafe’s spot name suggests, you will find plenty of great coffee drinks here. For something simple, opt for the light but satisfying house blend or the Vitalitea Nitro Cold Brew. Those who prefer espresso drinks will have plenty of great options. The Paia Bay Coffee Bar serves, of course, all of your standard espresso drinks along with their personalized espresso menu. Specialty express drinks offered include a very popular Vegan Caramel Coconut Macnut Milk Latte and Lavender Latte for all sweet-tooth lovers.
While some coffee shops are popular pretty much only because they have a good location, that isn’t true for Paia Bay Coffee and Bar. This cafe has several things going for it that make it a popular spot. Think atmosphere, friendly service, delicious beverages (including evening cocktails), and tasty menu items.
Paia Bay Coffee and Bar is located just off of the main intersection of Baldwin Ave. and Hana Hwy. They renovated the interior, adding artwork from local artist Amanda Alexander, better natural lighting and lush plants lining the entirety of the main dining area for guests. That ample natural light offers a great mix of indoor and outdoor seating, which including super comfy sofas on the lanai. Up front there’s a to-go coffee and pastry counter, that pops open when the Road to Hana traffic starts pouring into our North Shore community. There’s also a small stage here where local musicians often set up for evenings and further transform the setting.
Speaking of, with the recent closing of Charley’s (we know, terribly sad), there has been a serious lack of live music options in Paia. What was once a hot spot for local and visiting musicians, has recently suffered from not enough venues to support the talent. Enter PBCB, and their weekly Taco Tuesdays/Thirsty Thursdays, which have quickly become an uber popular neighborhood hang.
Taco Tuesday’s At Paia Bay Coffee and Bar
Even though the new location has only experienced a couple evenings so far, Taco Tuesday at Paia Bay Coffee and Bar seems destined to be one of the hottest hangouts on the North Shore. Both times we arrived shortly after 6PM, when the music starts, and both times we were met with a full house! If there’s no tables available, please note that the high tops and bar seating are all first some first serve (which we utilized happily).
The Taco Tuesday menu is short, but to the point and well priced. The tacos themselves, are $4 each for Pork Carnitas and Chicken Tinga, $5 for Vegan Nut Mixture, and $6 for Baja Fish. Our favorites are the chicken and vegan, with the vegan having an exceptionally hearty flavor for being so healthy! The drink specials are also priced remarkably well, considering recent trends. The $5 House Margaritas and $3 Mexican Drafts (+$1 for Michelada) are sure hard to beat value wise.
Tuesday night’s entertainment has been provided by local Maui musician, Sweet Beets, and her smooth acoustic guitar selections. She plays a wide range of styles, that can go from chill toe tapping tunes, to rousing covers that’ll make you want to get up and dance! She also invites friends up from time to time, usually fellow folk musicians, that gets the crowd even more rocking.
Overall, each one of our experiences at Paia Bay Coffee and Bar’s newly imagined location have been stellar. From the morning pastries and caffeinated offerings, to the afternoon noshing and evening cocktails. We are so excited to have a space like this on the North Shore of Maui again.
