World famous surf competitions are slated to return to the islands of Oahu and Maui this winter. The World Surf League’s (WSL) 2021 Championship Tour intended for December will only take place via live streams. In person attendance is not permitted under WSL’s COVID-19 protocols.
Monster surf competitions have attracted spectators from all over the world with thousands of gathering to enjoy the breathtaking displays of athleticism.
This year will see major changes to the competition, most notably being the broadcast stream only event with crowd gatherings discouraged. The WSL has worked in tandem with county officials to develop a plan that keeps both athletes and WSL staff safe.
Usually, the WSL season wraps up in Hawaii, but this year Hawaii is kicking off the 2021 Championship Tour! The Maui Pro presented by Roxy will feature some of the world’s best female surfers like Stephanie Gilmore, Carissa Moore, and Caroline Marks.
Maui Pro presented by ROXY at Honolua Bay begins on Friday, Dec. 4.
For public, the competition will be broadcast-only productions that will be streamed live on WorldSurfLeague.com and broadcast locally by the Spectrum SURF Channel. The league is also adding a new event—the Sunset Open—to its lineup.
The WSL’s safety plan includes: mandatory COVID testing for all athletes and staff, physical distancing, daily temperature checks and mandatory mask wearing.
