Last year’s HealthFest celebration to kick off the year

Queen Ka’ahumanu Center (QKC) announces the month of January as Live Local and Live Healthy Awareness Month. The month will be celebrated with QKC’s signature 3rd Annual HealthFest with healthy cooking demonstrations to fitness activities, health product and service booths, education and more. As an ongoing commitment to the Maui community, Queen Ka’ahumanu Center will celebrate and promote healthy living for the entire month of January. The month is dedicated to the education of living healthy through lifestyle choices. When: Saturday, January 12th from 10:00am to 1:00pm.Where: Queen Ka’ahumanu Center.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Peace March will honor the life and work of Dr. King and will begin at the MLK Stone of Hope Monument in Wailuku. Opening ceremonies will be held at 8:30 a.m. followed by the Peace March  beginning at 9:00 a.m. The event is free and open to the public and includes entertainment, food and fun. When: Monday, January 21 beginning at 8:30am. Where: 200 High Street in Wailuku, HI. 

Doing Good For the Community

The Hawaiian Islands Land Trust (HILT) will host its 18th annual Buy Back the Beach: Mālama Kīpuka Benefit Lū‘au. The fundraising event gathers some of Hawaii’s most committed conservationist for an island style party that enables the land trust to continue and advance its conservation projects. Attendees will be treated to some great drinks, the opportunity to participate in a live and silent auction, plus some great entertainment by local performers. The benefit proceeds goes towards protecting the precious landscapes and places in Hawaii. When: Saturday, January 26th from 5:00pm to 9:00pm. Where: Old Lahaina Luau. Tickets are $200/person or table pricing available.

Join the Whale Trust research team and guests for the Songs of the Pacific event, an evening of supporting the humpback. This unforgettable evening will feature outrigger canoe trips from shore, a sunset dinner at the beach by Chef Lee, and a private concert by John Cruz. Attire for the event is beach casual. This benefit event will help fund the Whale Trust research team’s humpback whale behavior studies throughout the upcoming season. Cost: $175/ person. When: Saturday, January 5th from 5:00pm to 9:00pm. Where: Sugar Beach Events in North Kihei. 

Local boy and professional baseball player, Kurt Suzuki will be hosting his 5th Annual Taste of Hawaii Charity which is a tropical themed fundraising gala to benefit the Kurt Suzuki Family Foundation. The event brings local celebrity chefs and various professional athletes together for an evening of first class entertainment. Alan Wong and four celebrity chefs will host their own gourmet food stations each paired with a Major League Baseball player or professional athlete to serve our guests throughout the evening. When: Sunday, January 13th from 5:30pm to 8:00pm. Where: 4 Seasons Maui, Wailea. 

The Arts & Culture

Filmed by famous surf cinematographer, Bud Browne, “The Essence” shares the beauty of surfing while exploring what drives surfers to surf. Beautifully weaved into the film is archival footage from the Bud Browne Film Archives, including over 50 of surfing’s greatest legends.The film celebrates the sport and the generations who defined it and the mystery of riding waves through the eyes of surfing’s history. The film also includes exclusive interviews with professional surfing athletes, Kai Lenny and Paige Alms. Tickets: $12 (plus applicable fees). When: Thursday, January 10th from 7:00-9:00pm. Where: Castle Theater.

Join Willie K for an eclectic and electrifying night as he hosts local and far away guests for the annual Willie K & Friends Bluesfest. A living legend in Hawai‘i, Willie K inspires many with his diverse range of musical genres and ability to entice many of the world’s best performers to play as his guest artists. Tickets: $12 (kids 2-12/general admission), $40 (adult/general admission), $65, $85 with a limited number of $250 VIP packages (plus applicable fees). When: Saturday, January 5th, starting at 6:00pm. Where: A&B Amphitheater/Yokouchi Pavilion at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center.
