Jazz Maui 2015 is holding a free concert in the park to celebrate the Fourth of July. The event is featuring the University of Texas Arlington Jazz Faculty, Chop Suey Jazz Band and the Maui Community Band. Traditional holiday favorites will be featured followed by fireworks! Lahaina Library Lawn, Saturday, July 4th, 5:00-9:30 pm.

A Buddhist tradition not only limited to the month of July, obon festivals are a centuries-old Buddhist tradition to honor our loved ones who have passed. Every summer in Hawaiʻi (beginning of June to end of August), Buddhist temples come alive with colorful celebration: kimono-clad dancers, music, favorite local foods, and more. The festivals are held on Fridays and start around dinner time, every week the time and location changes. A full Maui obon list compiled nicely by our friends over at Maui Magazine.

Great way to get exercise for the family the Iao Valley 10K course starts at the Wailuku Municipal Parking Lot off of Vineyard Street. Follows Vineyard Street up to Main Street and into scenic Iao Valley State Park and then a rolling downhill course back to Wailuku. Online entries closes July 14th, 2015 at 11:00 PM, Late entries will be accepted at Packet Pick-Up for $40, Race day registration will be $45. Race date is set for Saturday, July 18, at 7:30 am. More info can be found at Valley Isle Road Runners.

Culture & the Arts

Educational & Hawaiian Cultural Series: “Moku`ula by Moonlight” is a free event that will feature stories told by lineal descendants of Moku`ula (a once freshwater pond, now dredged and filled into a state park) who will speak about life in the early 20th century in Lahaina. The event will be held on the lawn next to Hale Halawai in Kamehameha Iki Beach Park, 525 Front St, Lahaina. Wednesday, July 1, 6:30 pm.

Hawaiian Island Land Trust: Talk Story on the Land Hike-Waihee Coastal Land Dunes is a free opportunity to pick the brains of local environmentalist versed in local agriculture. Explore the wetlands and view the sand dunes and shoreline on the 277-acre conserved property. This is a unique opportunity to learn and work on the Waihee Coastal Dunes & Wetlands Refuge. They plan to meet across the street from Waihee School on Saturday, July 11, 9 am. Explore the wetlands and view the sand dunes and shoreline on the 277-acre conserved property.

Adult Interests

The Society Of Seven, have developed a fantastic reputation as Hawaii’s favorite show band and are delighted to be returning to Maui. After a fifteen year absence, the SOS return for a one night concert with founding members Tony Ruivivar and Bert Sagum. Per an online review, “Young, mature, or young at heart…. SOS is a great show for all ages to enjoy. A little Sinatra, a little Elvis, some Sonny and Cher, some Broadway, plus a whole lot of funny antics from some very talented guys.” Maui Arts & Cultural Center, Friday, July 31, 7:30 pm. Tickets can be bought through the MACC box office.

Mayor Arakawa’s gala benefit for the Communtiy Kokua Fund, “A Night of Magic” is slated for Saturday July 11th, 5:30pm at the Grand Wailea Resort. Tickets start at $175 and the first 500 tickets purchased will receive a $100 gift certificate for Fleetwoods on Front Street! 23rd Annual Arthur T. Ueoka Memorial Scholarship Golf Tournament has been a successful endeavor over the pas twenty two years and has been able to provide $80,500.00 in scholarship support to law students with Maui connections!  The tournament is to help ensure the legacy Arthur T.
