February 2023 Calendar of Events

We here at the Sayles Team hope that everyone had a great start of the new year! Did you get to attend any of last month’s featured events? February is just around the corner, and this month is chalk full of fantastic entertainment options and family fun activituies. There’s a month long festival that celebrates our island’s favorite annual visitors. The MACC will again host toe-tapping, world-class musical acts; hilarious stand-up comedians; a special celebration of a hula icon; and even an intimate evening with a best selling author! Let’s start by highlighting the February long festival featuring everyone’s favorite gentle giants, the humpback whale.

Maui Whale Festival

Occurring throughout the month of February, Maui Whale Festival celebrates the return of migrating humpback whales to Maui Nui. The multi-tiered offering encourages residents, visitors and people around the world to participate in and support Pacific Whale Foundation‘s ocean conservation efforts through events such as Race for Whales and large-scale community beach cleanups to educational, family-friendly activities.

Race for Whales

Race for Whales, a virtual event open to global participants, is back for 2023 and taking place all month long. Race for Whales invites registrants to upload and track any and all movement, whether running, walking, biking, etc., measured in miles throughout the month. T-shirts will be available for purchase, and participants who complete 43 miles will receive medals commemorating 2023 as PWF’s 43rd year dedicated to protecting whales and dolphins and inspiring environmental stewardship.

Other Events

The month-long celebration will feature myriad opportunities to learn about marine mammals, the challenges they face and how we can all be part of the solution. Additional events and activities planned for 2023 Maui Whale Festival include PWF Conservation program’s inaugural large-scale community beach cleanups to be held weekly on Maui throughout February at presently under-served coastal locations. On-island participants are invited to clean up debris and submit their recorded findings to PWF, thereby enabling the organization to continue ongoing research to inform effective measures that protect the waters of Maui Nui. Beach cleanup T-shirts will be available for purchase through Bonfire. A virtual cleanup component may be added if supporters want to organize beach cleanups in their local area and submit debris collection forms to PWF. See flyer above for all the details, including time and location.

Whale Tales

Whale Tales is hosted annually by Whale Trust, a Maui-based nonprofit organization dedicated to whale research and ocean education. Whale Tales is both an educational event that bridges the information gap between scientists working in the field and the public, as well as a means to raise funds to support whale research in Hawaii. All proceeds from the Whale Tales event are distributed to selected organizations and students to support whale research in Hawaii through the Whale Tales Beneficiaries Program.

The Pacific Whale Foundation’s Education team will be participating in the Art & Education Expo as part of Whale Trust’s annual Whale Tales. They’ll be one of many organizations represented in the Marine Science Center, featuring hands-on learning for all ages.
