Maui has been voted the best island in the world by Conde Nast Traveler for countless years for good reason.
The abundance of family friendly activities to participate in are almost too much to list. I wanted to share a few of my favorite things to do in this blog.
Depending on your activity level, and how much time you have on the island to explore, you may want to consider planning your itinerary far in advance.
One of my personal favorites is hiking into Haleakala Crater after watching the sunrise over the Mauna. Reservations are needed these days so please make sure to get one if you want to get in there for sunrise. If you don’t have a reservation, you will be turned around at the ranger station from 3am-7am. Book your Haleakala reservation: https://www.recreation.gov/ticket/facility/253731
You must also drive The Road to Hana while you’re staying on Maui. I would highly recommend staying out in Hana for one night if possible as it’s a really long day trip otherwise. Book your Hana stay here: https://www.hyatt.com/en-US/hotel/hawaii/hana-maui-resort/oggal
This unique adventure is complete with epic waterfall views and ocean views throughout the journey. You and your family will be navigating a long windy road, and will be driving through several one lane bridges through tranquil tropical rainforest and so much more. I would not recommend doing any of the guided tours out to Hana which is a total waste of money and a miserable experience. When driving the road yourself, you might consider using the Gypsy app which gives you solid cultural information and helpful advice on some of the best mile markers to stop at. Make sure you have a full tank of gas, plenty of water, and please for the love of God: LET LOCALS PASS. If a local driver pulls behind you and starts tailgating you, please pull over at the next available stop. This will save you lots of stress on the journey trust me.
A snorkel trip over to Molokini is another must do activity during your stay. To be out on the water with a cold beverage in hand, and look back at magical Maui is truly something special. I would recommend going on one of the smaller boats like Sail Trilogy as opposed to going on the bigger boats which cram too many people on board. I would also highly recommend taking the earliest snorkel trip of the day before the trade winds start blasting.
The Molokini crater has wonderful visibility and the snorkeling is pretty cool. Many of the snorkel boats Like Trilogy include a full lunch, plenty of snacks, and complementary adult beverages on the ride back to the Maalaea Harbor.
Surfing, sailboarding, stand up paddle boarding, kayaking, ziplining, horseback riding, jet skiing, and whale watching are just a few more of the many fun things to do while you are visiting Maui.
Don’t just sit by the pool sipping cocktails and reading all day (although that’s fun too). Take life by the horns and get after it while you’re here!
