Courses in the areas of Wailea, Kapalua, Kihei, and Kaanapali are rated highly because there is just enough of a challenge, yet easy enough to keep them coming back. The Sayles Team has selected some of our favorites across the valley isle.
Wailea
Wailea is a golfer’s paradise with 3 different courses to choose from, all more than capable of offering a great golfing experience. From the first class staff to the manicured greens, you can’t go wrong.
The most challenging of the 3 and a Robert Trent Jones Jr. design, the Gold Course entails a rugged and rolling terrain. The championship tees of course will be the most difficult, but the graduated forward tees make the layout a little more forgiving for less-skilled players.
The Emerald Course is challenging enough for experienced golfers without being discouraging to beginners. Hence its 7 appearances on Golf for Women magazine as one of the U.S.’s most women-friendly courses. Fantastic views abound with fantastic views of the Pacific Ocean and Mount Haleakala.
The Old Wailea Blue Course is the oldest of the Wailea resort courses and the most player-friendly in terms of pricing and play. The Old Blue course will be the one you see as you make your way into Wailea from Piilani Highway.
Kihei
Located in early Kihei, the Maui Nui Golf Course is enjoyed by many for its lack of rainfall and wind. The course is shield by both Haleakala and the West Maui Mountains which create the perfect conditions for golfers.
Formerly known as the Elleair, the course is under new management and carries a reputation for being one of the busiest on the island. At Maui Nui, the course is player-friendly and the view changes on every hole. Fairways were recently widened and the greens are large, but a player wanting to score well will still need to keep the ball in play.
Kapalua
If you’re looking for a test to gauge your level of play against the pros, then the Plantation Course is the one for you. Not only is the course long (7411 yards), it is also riddled with elevation changes at every hole — even the par 3s! The highlight if the course is the finish. The 18th hole is the biggest test of all at 650 yards, although, sone would argue that the 8th hole par 3 at 2013 yards is more of challenge because of the elevated tee box and deep ravine to chip your ball over.
If tee times are booked up at the Plantation Course, then you can also check out the Bay Course which is also in the Kapalua Resort. Just like its counterpart, the Bay Course offers stunning views of Molokai’s eastern shores.
Kaanapali
Comprised on 1200 acres of premier crown lands, the Kaanapali Resort just past Lahaina is home to two highly regarded courses. Based off of an Arthur Jack Snyder design from 1962, the Kaanapali Kai course is shorter and narrower than its sister course. The Royal Kaanpali course is a nice alternative because it is less expensive to play, but still offers the same views and world class round of golf. This course sits a little higher than Kaanapali Kai and offers a unique experience because the holes are tucked away in the lower slopes of the West Maui Mountains.
The Ka’anapali Kai course is an Arthur Jack Snyder design from 1962. It’s shorter and more narrow than its sister Royal Kaanapali course but is less expensive to play. Many holes are tucked into the West Maui Mountains. Visit the resort’s website for details on rates and discounts.
