Makawao Public House–A Nostalgic Culinary Journey Upcountry

Nestled in the heart of Maui’s Upcountry, the recently opened Makawao Public House breathes new life into the historic building once home to the beloved Makawao Steakhouse. This charming eatery pays homage to its predecessor by preserving pieces of the past, such as vintage menus on display and the preservation of the iconic fireplace, creating a bridge between the old and the new.

Upon entering, the vibrant atmosphere of Makawao Public House is immediately palpable. Located off Baldwin Ave in Makawao town, the restaurant is bustling with patrons and attentive staff, offering a vibrant dining experience. Despite the lively chatter, the ambiance remains inviting, with the echoes of happy conversations adding to the character of the place. Our party of five was seated promptly, thanks to a reservation made through OpenTable.

Speaking of, being Upcountry’s newest dining destination, reservations are highly recommended (and most likely needed for weekends; we’ve been told they were booked solid on multiple occasions already)! Shortly after being seated, we were greeted by our server whose kindness and attentiveness set the tone for an exceptional evening.

Makawao Public House Menu

The menu at Makawao Public House is a testament to the culinary creativity of Executive Chef Scotty Robs, who takes pride in personally welcoming guests and ensuring their dining experience is outstanding. Our table indulged in an array of dishes, each bursting with flavor and beautifully presented. The Pupu Steak, cooked to a perfect medium-rare and nestled atop a bed of fresh vegetables, was a standout with its tender and flavorful meat.

The Seared Ahi Sashimi was also a scrumptious appetizer. The fish itself was as fresh and tender as could be, and the Hawaiian chili/lilikoi beurre bland raised the flavor profile to another level. The MPH Ramen also did not disappoint, with its rich broth infused with shoyu, garlic, miso, and a hint of spice, offering a delightful twist to the classic dish. The highlight of the evening was the Kalbi braised boneless short rib, so tender that it melted in our mouths, leaving a savory impression that lingered long after the meal.

Don’t forget to leave room for dessert! We enjoyed both the Cheescake and Chocolate Tarte immensely, and felt they were exquisite finishes to a fine meal. Makawao Public House is more than just a place to eat; it’s a culinary journey that celebrates the rich history of Makawao while embracing the innovation of modern cuisine.

Living up the institution that housed its predecessor, this is a restaurant where the past and present meet, creating a dining experience that is both nostalgic and refreshingly new. Whether you’re a local or a visitor exploring Maui’s upcountry, a trip to Makawao Public House is sure to be a memorable part of your journey.
