Which Surprising Maui Hotel Was Just Voted #1 Resort By Travel & Leisure

Four Seasons Lanai Manele Bay

With numerous world class resorts across Hawaii, it may be tough to choose the right one. We’ve all been there, the dreaded analysis paralysis. In fact, here on Maui, there are at least a dozen that we continuously recommend to family and friends. We may be biased, but we honestly feel our island has some of the best hotels anywhere.

So, when Travel & Leisure releases their yearly best of lists, we eagerly await to see if their readers feel the same. Well the rankings were just released and it seems we’re in agreement. Maui has the highest concentration of top resorts in all of Hawaii!

6 Maui Hotels in the Top 13!

Four Seasons Wailea, Maui, Pool Fountain at Night

Travel & Leisure asked their thousands of readers to rate their favorite resort based on the following criteria:

  • Rooms/facilities
  • Location
  • Service
  • Food
  • Value

While each of the main islands were represented, Maui stands alone with the most on the top end of the ratings. As you might imagine, the resort areas of South Maui and West Maui (specifically in Wailea and Kapalua) dominated the list, along with Lanai (which is of course located in Maui county).

We are also pleased to see East Maui and the Hana Maui Resort garnering much deserved recognition. They have been a favorite “stay-cation” of our family for years!

Which Maui Hotel Was Voted Top Resort In Hawaii?

Hotel Wailea Shaka Sign Poolside

As the only Top 20 resort not located oceanfront, this may come as a surprise to some. But experienced readers should be familiar as this property garnered the same position in last years rankings. Yes, it’s Hotel Wailea that again reached the top spot! As unique as it is to have a top-rated resort on Maui not located near the ocean, there is something even more special about this property that helps it stand out among the rest…Hotel Wailea is actually the sole adults-only resort in all of Hawaii!

What Do Guests Love About Hotel Wailea?

Wailea is one of the main resort zones on Maui, though you wouldn’t know it while staying at Hotel Wailea: “It’s not on the beach but is perched on a hill overlooking the ocean. There’s a shuttle down to one of the best beaches in Maui,” explained one visitor. Its under-the-radar location and adults-only policy make it one of the quietest stays on Maui — a sharp contrast to the big, bustling resorts on the shore below.

Other standout features, according to another voter, include “some of the best cocktails I have had and wonderful food. But the very best thing is the Birdcage, an open-air bar where dozens of birds nest, and from where you can watch the sunsets. It’s heaven on earth.”
