SUP at Charley Young Beach in Kihei

Stand Up Paddling, otherwise known as SUP, is becoming a very popular water sports, not only on Maui but globally as well. I recently got into SUP and enjoyed it! My friend Steve Nickens generously lent me his board and paddle and we had a blast! I made a coast run from Sugar Cove to Kanaha. Not bad for a first time ride.

There are many areas on Maui that is perfect for SUP, like beaches along Kihe, Wailea and Makena. Some spots are perfect for beginners while other spots are more challenging. For the more sophisticated SUP enthusiasts, they go for long distance and race.

Back to the beginners like me, it is best to go early in the morning when the wind is not too strong. This is when owning an oceanfront or beachfront property would be an advantage. You won’t have to drive to go stand up paddling – you just wake up early and go.
