What Does it Really Mean to Live Sustainably on Maui?
It means choosing to raise my family in Haiku.
Being born and raised on this island, I could have made a home anywhere. But I chose Haiku. My family relocated to the North Shore from our home in Kihei when I was 14, and never looked back. Haiku is where the land, the rain, and the community all come together in a way that feels grounded, sustainable, and family centered. Agricultural (“AG”) zoning is what makes this lifestyle possible. It allows property owners to live close to the ʻāina growing food, to build homes for ʻohana, to create a life that feels intentional and abundant.

Living Close to the Land
On my own four acre estate, I don’t need to irrigate my garden or water my trees. The skies take care of it. With 50 to 80 inches of rain every year, the land stays fertile without human intervention. Orchards thrive. Pastures stay alive. We play in streams and shower under waterfalls. Misty rainbows grace the morning, golden sunlight in the afternoon. And those cleansing showers keep everything fresh.

What makes Haiku special goes beyond the weather or the land. A true sense of community. Neighbors wave. We look after each other. Watch after our keiki and pets. Local markets and restaurants bring us all together. Artists, surfers, and families share the same country roads. Sure, it is rural. But never isolated in spirit!

As a parent, one of the best parts of living in Haiku is how close we are to some of the finest schools on Maui. Montessori School of Maui (MOMI) is just minutes away. Carden Academy offers a nurturing environment with small class sizes. Seabury Hall in Makawao provides one of the strongest college prep experiences in the Pacific. My 2 younger brothers and I all went to Seabury. That experience helped us all thrive at the collegiate level and beyond. We share lifelong friends from our time there.

Raising a family here means our keiki can enjoy wide open land at home, quick access to sand, surf, hikes, waterfalls, and everything in between. All while also having access to world class education just a short drive away.
The Neighborhoods That Make Haiku

Haiku is technically a singular town, with one zip code. But it is also extremely diverse. A collection of eclectic communities, each with its own personality. Here are some of our favorite subdivisions…
Haiku Town Acres: one of the most desirable newer subdivisions, with two acre parcels that offer room for orchards, animals, and gardens. It strikes the perfect balance between country privacy and quick access to schools, local eateries like Nuka, and world class water sports. It’s a gated community, and one of the hippest neighborhoods on the North Shore…

Haiku Mauka: forty parcels stretching between Haleakalā and Maliko Gulch. Families love the play areas and open fields, while equine enthusiasts enjoy being close to the Tom Morrow Equestrian Center.
Haiku Makai: breezy, coastal, and lined with palms. Just twenty eight parcels, each two acres or more, only minutes to Paia and the ocean.
Hog Back Road: rolling parcels with lots of acreage and a mix of forested privacy and wide open ocean views. A favorite for those seeking space and seclusion.

Maui Ranch Estates: seventy five parcels with homes spanning decades, many renovated into modern retreats. Ohana ADUs are allowed, making this ideal for extended families.
Awalau: high in the hills past Hanzawa store, a retreat-like community with large parcels perfect for orchards, horses, or simply a quieter Maui lifestyle. An ideal place to retire and reflect on the surrounding beauty.

Peahi Farms: perched above the rugged North Shore cliffs near Peahi (aka Jaws), offering dramatic ocean views and a true connection to the power of Maui’s coastline.
Kauhikoa Farms: a practical and beautiful option close to Haʻikū Town, with spacious parcels and mountain or ocean views.
CPR and Flexibility

For landowners, one of the greatest strengths of AG zoning is the ability to create a CPR, or Condominium Property Regime. This process allows a parcel to be divided into separate units, each with its own building rights. The “A” side usually allows for the main home without size limits… while the “B” side allows a cottage capped at fifteen hundred square feet. This flexibility has created opportunities for ʻohana housing, rentals, and sustainable land sharing.
Why I Stay in Haʻikū

For me, choosing Haiku is about raising my family in a place that is both rooted and forward thinking. A place where kids and animals have space to roam on green acres, where neighbors know your name, and where the rain keeps the land alive. Close proximity to some of Maui’s very best schools. Rainfall that nourishes. Neighbors that care. Horses grazing in the fields. Surfboards stacked in truck beds. Kids laughing in wide open spaces. Of all the places I could have chosen on Maui… I chose Haiku. And I would choose it again!

What is AG zoning, and why does it matter in Haiku?
Agricultural zoning supports low-density living, sustainable land use, and the ability to grow food, raise animals, and build multiple dwellings on one parcel.
How much rain does Haiku get, and is it manageable?
Haiku receives between 50–80 inches of rain annually. The rainfall keeps the land lush and productive year-round, perfect for gardens and orchards without irrigation.

Is Haiku too remote or rural for families?
Not at all. While it’s peaceful and spread out, it’s just a short drive to world-class schools, beaches, and amenities. Many families thrive here thanks to that balance.
What’s the vibe of the community like?
Supportive, diverse, and connected. Artists, surfers, farmers, retirees, and professionals share the same roads and help each other out. It’s rural, but never isolated.
