There’s no shortage of amazing places to visit on Maui, but Ocean Vodka Organic Farm & Distillery stands out for a few reasons. First, the location—perched at 1,000 feet elevation on the gentle slopes of Haleakalā in Lower Kula, with sweeping views of the island’s north and south shores. Second, the vibe—laid-back, open-air, and perfect for unwinding after a long day Upcountry. And finally, the experience itself. Whether you’re there for a tour, a tasting, or just some cocktails at sunset, this place makes it easy to stick around longer than you planned.
Located at 4051 Omaopio Road, the property stretches across 80 acres of open farmland, and it’s clear that the team behind it has a long-term vision. Ocean Vodka is best known for its clean, sustainably made spirits, distilled onsite from organically grown sugarcane. But they’ve expanded well beyond vodka—they now produce Kula Rum, Fy Gin, and a special Bourbon Barrel Aged Rum, all crafted with the same commitment to organic farming and clean water (they use deep ocean mineral water from the Big Island).
The daily farm tours are a good way to learn the story behind the bottles. They run between 11AM and 5PM, and tastings include a lineup of their spirits with a short walk through the sugarcane fields. It’s casual, informative, and ends with a great view—and a good drink. No reservation required, though weekends can get busy.
What to Order at Ocean Vodka
After the tour, most people stick around for kau kau at the Café, which opens at 11:30AM and runs into the early evening. The menu leans toward casual comfort: flatbread pizzas, fresh salads, and delicious local-style pupus, most with ingredients grown either on-site or nearby. Some of our favorites are the absolutely loaded Ahi Poke Nachos (pictured below) and zesty Thai Curry Chicken Tacos. Their cocktail list is, as you’d expect, a highlight—especially the ones built around their seasonal ingredients and fresh herb infusions. We love the Espresso Martini, Green Harvest (with organic vodka, lime juice, pineapple, and cilantro/jalapeno syrup) or the Lychee Chiller (pictured above, with FY Organic Gin, lychee juice, lavender syrup and fresh lemon). It’s as close to farm-to-glass as it gets on Maui.
By late afternoon, the place really comes to life. There’s usually live music from 4:30 to 7PM, and the expansive lawn area (complete with Adirondack chairs, picnic tables, and plenty of space to spread out) becomes a gathering place for families, couples, and anyone chasing that golden hour light. It’s also one of our favorite venues to bring larger groups—the views are stunning, the drinks are cold, and everyone has room to relax.
Ocean Vodka is still a bit of a hidden gem, especially for visitors who don’t make it Upcountry often. But it’s worth the trip. Whether you’re there for a tasting, a sunset hang, fundraising opportunity or to check out a private event, you’ll leave with a better feel for what makes Maui special: real people, thoughtful land stewardship, and a deep-rooted sense of place.
