Welcome back to your monthly Maui Calendar of Events, where we hand pick a handful of events and activities that you’re sure to enjoy! July 2024 on Maui is highlighted by Hawaii’s biggest rodeo and cowboy celebration, the Makawao Stampede, where you can experience the thrill of traditional rodeo competitions and festivities. Runners will be eager to join the group run hosted by Valley Isle Road Runners, offering a scenic and invigorating way to explore Maui.

The Wailuku First Friday street fair promises a lively evening of local food, music, and crafts, perfect for a night out with family and friends. Art enthusiasts will appreciate an exhibit that delves into surfing’s 2,000-year history, showcasing stunning pieces that celebrate this iconic sport. For theater lovers, a full-length musical based on the whimsical works of Dr. Seuss will provide a delightful and entertaining experience. Lastly, don’t miss the stand-up show featuring one of Hawaii’s most popular comedians, Tumua, whose famous crowd work and audience interaction is sure to leave you in stitches.

Makawao Stampede 2024

Since its inception in 1955, Makawao Stampede has grown into one of Maui’s most eagerly awaited events, celebrating and showcasing the paniolo (cowboy) heritage and lifestyle of Hawaii. This weekend-long extravaganza features quality local horsemanship, roping skills, and overall skilled athletes. Accentuated by fantastic musicians, fabulous food, and the forever classic 4th of July community connection. There’s no question, Makawao Stampede is Hawaii’s largest rodeo and the must-attend paniolo event of the year!

Hosted at the Oskie Rice Event Center in Makawao, the 3-day event includes the rodeo, concerts, VIP experiences, vendor displays, artisans, food trucks, and fun for the whole family. The festivities kick off on July 5th with live music and pre-show entertainment from Hawaii’s very own family band, Kapena, from 5PM to 7PM. After that is the always thrilling Bull Bash, highlighted by competitive riding and barrel racing. Tickets are $50 for GA, $25 for Kupuna (65 years and older), $20 for Keiki (5 to 12 years old), and free to all those under 5. Available online for purchase here.

The weekend promises to be to be just as fun with even more rodeo performances, live entertainment and cherry on top, a Roselani’s Ice Cream eating contest! Saturday, July 6th, will feature the said ice cream eating contest, as well as a pre-show concert with The Rob Tracy Band from 11AM-1PM. Then from 1PM-5PM, initial rounds of Rodeo Performances and Trophy Events. The grande finale is Sunday July 7th, and will follow a similar schedule. Gates open at 10AM followed by live entertainment by The Original Ho’aikane Band 11AM-1PM; with Championship Rodeo Performances directly afterwards from 1PM-5PM.

Valley Isle Road Runners Group Run

Valley Isle Road Runners (VIRR) provides a group run every Wednesday at Kalama Park. Arrive 10-15 minutes early to talk story with your fellow runners and learn the route. All ages and abilities are welcome. Meet at the south end of Kalama Park in Kihei near the volleyball courts. There is parking, a water fountain, and bathrooms nearby. The 4 mile out and back route allows for runners to scale the run to their desired length. After the run, members are invited to gather and decompress at the food trucks at South Maui Gardens.

When: July 03, 2024; meet at 5PM, group run starts at 5:15PM. Where: 4 mile route is as follows: Runs north through Kalama Park to Halama St; Right on Waiohuli St; Left on S. Kihei Rd; Left on Lipoa St; Left on Uluniu Rd; Turn around point is at the VFW. This event is open to VIRR members only, a year long membership is $35 for adults and $20 for those 17 years and younger.

Wailuku First Friday

For those looking for a more urban celebration, you are invited to Wailuku First Friday. This is a monthly street party where locals and visitors come together to enjoy live music, food, art, and shopping. The event features various vendors, food trucks, crafters, makers and artists lining the streets of Wailuku. First Friday aims to promote local businesses and artists with a lively and festive atmosphere where people can stroll around, listen to music, sample different foods, and shop for unique goods. It’s a great way to experience the local culture and support the community of historic Wailuku.

He`e Nalu: The Art & Legacy of Hawaiian Surfing

In response to the 2024 Summer Olympic Surfing events scheduled to take place in Tahiti, the ancestral homeland of Kānaka Ōiwi and in time for the gathering of Pacifica artists and cultural partitioners at the 13th Festival of Pacific Arts & Culture (FestPAC) on Oahu. Kuaaina will be partnering with Hawaii based kānaka curators and arts organizations from Oahu, Hawaii Island and Maui with the plan to present smaller curated iterations of the larger exhibit “Hee Nalu: The Art & Legacy of Hawaiian Surfing” that was on exhibit at the Heard Museum in Phoenix, AZ in 2023.

The exhibit covered 2,000 years of surfing history and from the earliest stories of surf deities to contemporary works of art and surfing innovations through the lens of thirteen modern KānakaŌiwi creatives and cultural practitioners. Providing a cyclical narrative rooted in culture while addressing the complicated relationship that surfing’s Indigenous people have with the Western dominated billion-dollar surf industry today, these smaller exhibits will celebrate and uplift the rich cultural heritage and legacy of He`e Nalu.

Maui OnStage Proudly Presents – SUESSICAL

One of the most performed shows in America, Seussical is a fantastical, magical, musical extravaganza! Fun for the whole family! All of your favorite Dr. Seuss characters, including Horton the Elephant, The Cat in the Hat, Gertrude McFuzz, lazy Mayzie and a little boy with a big imagination – Jojo. These colorful characters transport us from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus to the invisible world of the Whos.

The Cat in the Hat tells the story of Horton, an elephant who discovers a speck of dust that contains the Whos, including Jojo, a Who child sent off to military school for thinking too many “thinks.” Horton faces a double challenge: not only must he protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he must guard an abandoned egg, left in his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him. Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community are challenged and emerge triumphant.

When: July 12, 13, 14, 19, 20, 21, 26, 27, 28 – Aug 2, 3, 4; Show Times: Friday and Saturday – 7:30PM (House opens at 7:00PM), Sunday matinee at 3:00PM (House opens at 2:30PM). Show Length is approximately 2.5 hours, including a 15 minute intermission. Where: Historic Iao Valley, 68 N Market St, Wailuku, HI 96793. Tumua – The Warrior Tour

Tumua is a stand-up comedian, podcaster, former collegiate athlete, and social media personality that was born and raised on Oahu. His online presence reaches over 600 thousand + followers combined on Instagram, Facebook, Tiktok, and YouTube. Tumua’s social media sketches and stand-up bits are very well known in the Polynesian community throughout the world! As a stand-up comic, Tumua has been selling out clubs, theaters, and even arenas all across the nation! In 2023 Tumua performed in 22 cities, 11 states, and 5 islands.

When: Friday July 12th, 2024; Original show at 7PM is sold out but a second show has been added at 9:30PM due to overwhelming demand! Where: Castle Theater, Maui Arts and Cultural Center, 1 Cameron Way, Kahului 96732. Tickets are $55, $70, and $80 and sold online only here.
