Welcome back to our new “Eat Like a Local” series, where we explore the beloved eateries that define the culinary landscape of the Valley Isle! This time, we’re shining the spotlight on Ichiban Okazuya, a true gem in Central Maui that has been serving up flavorful Japanese classics with a smile, for decades. Despite its unassuming appearance, surrounded by charming Wailuku homes, this humble eatery has become a staple for kama’aina, known for its delicious plate lunch options and friendly service.

What to Order at Ichiban Okazuya?

At Ichiban Okazuya, their mission is simple: to offer the most flavorful, authentic Japanese and Hawaiian dishes that keep customers coming back for more. The menu is packed with traditional favorites, each dish prepared with care and precision. Whether you’re in the mood for the crowd favorite chicken katsu, hot and crispy gyoza (both pictured as a House Combo two photos below), hearty donburi bowl, or light and flaky tempura, you’re sure to find something that delights your taste buds. And for those who love a bit of spice, their kimchi is legendary—just be prepared for its fiery and funky kick!

While Ichiban Okazuya just serves takeout style, this only adds to its charm. Grab your favorites and head to nearby Iao Valley (our personal favorite and less than 10 minutes away!) or one of Maui’s stunning parks or beaches for a perfect picnic setting. And if you’re looking to really customize your meal, they’re more than happy to substitute the rice for another side. We recommend the salted cabbage, classic nishime, or vibrant wakame!

Depending on your schedule, it’s helpful to know when to avoid the busiest times. The lunch rush kicks off before noon, while the dinner crowd starts rolling in around 4 pm. To skip the longest lines, try to time your visit outside these peak hours. You can always call in your order as well if you’re in a crunch. For most their existence, Ichiban Okazuya was a cash-only spot, but they now accept debit and credit cards for orders over $10, making it even more convenient to grab and go!
