Never Swim Alone

It’s crucial to have a buddy when venturing into the ocean. Swimming with a companion provides an extra set of eyes to look out for each other’s well-being. By sticking together, you can assist one another in case of any unforeseen circumstances and make your beach experience safer and more enjoyable.

Read and Obey Beach and Safety Signs

Maui’s beaches are dotted with informative signs that provide essential safety instructions. Pay attention to these signs, as they offer valuable information about potential hazards, local rules, and safety recommendations. By reading and obeying these signs, you can make informed decisions and protect yourself and others.

Rely on Your Swimming Ability

While flotation devices like boogie boards and inflatable toys are certainly fun beach companions, it’s important to rely primarily on your swimming ability in the ocean. Flotation devices can drift away or be ineffective in strong currents, putting you at risk. Building your swimming skills and confidence is the key to staying safe in the water.

Signal for Help in Strong Currents

If you find yourself caught in a powerful ocean current and are unable to swim back to shore, it’s important to remain calm. Remember, panicking can exhaust your energy quickly. Instead, signal for help by waving your arms and calling out for assistance. Lifeguards are trained to recognize distress signals and will come to your aid promptly. If you do have the energy to swim, never fight the current head on, always aim yourself parallel to shore.

Protect the Environment

As ocean lovers, it’s our responsibility to cherish and preserve the natural beauty of Maui. Refrain from touching or stepping on the delicate coral reefs, as they are vital ecosystems that support marine life. Don’t step over roped off sections of beach that are protecting our local watersheds. Let’s help keep the beaches clean by disposing of trash properly and embracing the “leave no trace” mentality. Together, we can ensure that Hawaii remains a paradise for generations to come.

If In Doubt, Don’t Go Out

Along with the buddy system, this is perhaps the golden rule of ocean safety. Simply put, trust your instincts and avoid swimming in conditions or locations that make you uncomfortable. This is especially true for beaches without lifeguards on duty. This saying serves as an important reminder. Exercise caution and make informed decisions when venturing into the waters or exploring the beaches. This ensures that you avoid unnecessary risks and preserves your well-being.

Additional Ocean Safety Tips

  • Avoid diving into unknown waters or shallow breaking waves, as this can lead to serious injuries.
  • Never attempt to dive over large waves, as they can be unpredictable and dangerous.
  • Before taking a plunge, consult with a lifeguard about beach and surf safety. They can provide invaluable insights about the local conditions, currents, and potential risks.

By adhering to these ocean safety tips, you can make the most of your time on Maui’s magnificent beaches while ensuring your well-being and that of those around you. Remember, the ocean is a powerful force, and it demands our respect. So, swim with caution, be vigilant, and let’s keep Maui’s shores safe, clean, and beautiful for everyone to enjoy. Mahalo!
