November 2022 Calendar of Events

Can we believe it’s already November? 2022 sure has flown by! Leaves are falling and cold temperatures becoming more and more prominent in most parts of the country. Yet, waking up this morning to warm temperatures on the North Shore, the old adage “Lucky we live Maui” popped to mind. In my opinion, our yearlong, world-class weather is best during these coming Autumn and Winter months. Sunshine and rainbows are a daily occurrence. The nights are a touch cooler, but worst case is you need a light jacket or extra blanket. This perfect weather is awesome for so many reasons, obviously; but a big benefit is that we get to enjoy large outdoor events year round like we’re still dressed for the beach! This month’s roundup of activities and events features one of these very open air festivals. Get ready for the kick off of the holiday season at the Made in Maui County Festival:

Hawaiian Airlines Made in Maui County Festival

After a two year hiatus, it’s back and live again! Maui County’s largest products show, returns now in its ninth year. This popular event features over 140 vendors offering hundreds of made in Maui County products, including: food, art, crafts, jewelry, fashion, furniture, gifts, collectibles and more — ALL in one location!

30th Annual Hula O Na Keiki Hula Competition

Hula O Na Keiki is a solo hula competition for children ages 5-17. Participants are required to learn, interpret, and perform a Maui chant. The hula competition, however, is just one facet of a three-day event designed to allow participants the opportunity to learn about and nurture Hawaiian cultural values. This gives each student a sense of appreciation for the past. A deeper sense of identity with their Hawaiian ancestors. Its intent to provide an avenue through which they may express their new understanding and awareness of the Hawaiian language and culture through the art of hula and oli.

The competition also advocates for the writing of new mele and the perpetuation of hapa haole music. The Hawaiian Festival of Arts and Crafts, in conjunction with Hula O Na Keiki, features unique local artisans. It also provides a venue for participants, their halau, ohana, and the community to learn from cultural practitioners through demonstrations, presentations, and workshops. The three-day event runs from November 10th to the 12th at the Ka’anapali Beach Hotel.

ELI MAC with Mystic Roots

This next event I’m highlighting is near and dear to my heart, as I was lucky enough to call this talented artist my friend as I grew up. Eli Mac got her start on the big stage in LA as a young girl named Camile Velasco. Her early claim to fame surely was making it to the Top Ten of season three of “American Idol,” but she’s well on her way to seizing her own celebrity as Eli Mac, a reggae star in her own right. From there she’s been touring with Sublime, The Green, and J Boog. She’s opened for Lauren Hill, Shaggy, and SOJA. After her Dubstop EP, she had the five-track Tricky One released last year. That was followed by the single “Roots Girl.” This show starts at 9PM on November 5th at Da Playground Maui in Ma’alaea; tickets are $30 and available online here.

JUST ADDED TO SHOW!

Mystic Roots Band (MRB) is a Chico, CA-born, 5-piece pop reggae fusion band. With two feet solidly in reggae, the band seamlessly juggles elements of dancehall, Hip-Hop, EDM, pop, and a taste of rock. The band is always sharpening their evolving musical arrangements of vocal harmonies that are made richer by the groups’ female/male dynamic. The music and lyrics are catchy and upbeat, yet with a powerful, positive message. Attending a Mystic Roots live concert guarantees not just music for your ears, but also a high-energy show and powerful experience you’ll never forget. MRB promotes positivity and spreads a conscious message while still having a good time and keeping the party going!
