Maui Vacation Rentals Given Go Ahead

Last week Friday, June 12th, Mayor Michael Victorino officially announced that transient vacation rentals a.k.a. short term vacation rentals will be allowed to resume operation as of Tuesday, June 16th under Governor Ige’s most recent proclamation. Up until this point, vacation rentals have not been allowed to operate and have seen zero rental income since the end of March.

While vacation rental owners welcome the reopening news, there is a major caveat operators must overcome. Vacation rentals are only allowed to be rented to local residents, interisland travelers not subject to the 14-day quarantine day period, and out-of-state visitors who have completed the 14-day quarantine at a hotel.

Although the use of vacation rentals are under strict restrictions, the possibility of rental income is a short term win operators will take. However, vacation rental operators still must think long term as the 14-day quarantine period for out-of-state visitors will remain in effect until July 31.

While some vacation rental operators may be desperate to generate rental revenue and disregard Governor Ige’s proclamation, it includes the option for the county to pursue criminal charges against those who violate the quarantine requirements. Hosts who rent to people who are under the 14-day quarantine, and if convicted could face jail up to one year and a fine of up to $5,000.

Hotels and motels are playing a crucial role in reopening Hawaii’s economy as they are allowed to house out-of-state visitors while they complete their 14-day quarantine. The hotels and motels that do house the out-of-state visitors must be able to monitor and enforce the quarantine requirements. The state is working on a list of hotels, motels, and condotels who meet the state’s monitoring requirement.
