The Ideal Day On Maui’s North Shore

The North Shore region of Maui covers over 15 square miles and includes the areas of Haiku, Hookipa, Huelo, and Spreckelsville/Paia/Kuau.

Ho’okipa is a beach located on the Hana Highway along Maui’s North Shore and is well known for ocean sports and may be the most renowned windsurfing spot in the world. While Huelo is considered a part of Haiku and is along the road to Hana.

8am: Don’t Skip Breakfast

My hands down favorite breakfast spot on the North Shore is Charley’s. While I’m partial to the enormous blueberry pancakes topped with coconut syrup, their most popular breakfast item is the Cajun Ono Eggs Benedict.  Some other great early morning choices are the massive breakfast burrito, veggie scramble, Paniolo steak and eggs, or the 3 item omelet.

10:00am: Twin Falls

Twin Falls is the first of many accessible waterfalls you’ll find along the way to Haba, attracting more than a quarter of a million visitors each year. Accessed only by crossing through a family-owned, bio-diverse farm since 1997, Wailele Farm is committed to honoring the traditional uses of the Ho’olawa Valley by keeping access to the farm and its multiple waterfalls free and open to the public.

One of the first things signaling your arrival at Twin Falls is the famous fruit stand, where a pre-waterfall smoothie, coconut candy and banana bread are the name of the game. All fruit from the stand is grown directly on the farm, which receives anywhere from 80 to 100 inches of rain per year from streams running directly through the 39-acre farm.

12:30pm: Nuka

Ever since Nuka opened their doors back in March of 2013, they have been redefining what it means to grab sushi in Haiku. Nuka is led by Moon Greene, who has established herself as passionate and successful restaurant owner on Maui. She is also the co-owner along with Yuri Soledade of the Paia Fish Market

Greene’s track record speaks for herself and it helps that she has Hiro Takanashi, Nuka’s master sushi chef backing her up. Hiro has been plying his trade on Maui for over thirty years now, his passion for his work is best understood  Nuka’s variety of specialty rolls and pupu plates, where they serve sushi and Japanese food izakaya style.

2:00pm: Hit North Shore’s Best Beaches

Maui’s North Shore is one of the most eclectic, diverse, and country communities across the isles. Early on the North Shore just before Paia is the community of Spreckelsville. North Shore’s best beaches.

6:30pm: Paia

Paia Town, known affectionately as the hippie town of Maui, is a beloved home base for all kinds, including advanced surfers, country music legend Willie Nelson and even the occasional world-renowned visual artist. It seems this tiny town, which consists of only one main street, is where a large portion of Maui’s economy and cultural melting pot got its start.

Wrap up your day with dinner at a few North Shore favorites:

  • Mama’s Fish House
  • Flatbread: Is easily among Maui’s best pizza places because of its Paia vibes and devotion to local and organic ingredients. Their popularity has steadily increased over the years, so keep that in mind if you do decide to dine there. My personal favorite is the Kalua Pork Mopsy, it is an unbelievable combination of pulled pork shoulder, fresh Maui goat cheese, mozzarella, red onions, pineapple, on top of a delicious mango-BBQ sauce.
  • Paia Fish Market
  • Cafe Mambo: This little restaurant has a huge Mediterranean flair.  They serve up amazing tapas, paella, fajitas, burgers, and tagines (a Morrocan stew). Simply put, the orange, honey, and soy glazed kalua duck fajitas are some of the best I’ve ever had.
