Just off of Makena Alanui Road sitting among the desirable beachfront Makena Real Estate is quite possibly Hawaii’s Best Beach. Famed for its monster waves and long stretch of sandy shores, Makena Beach aka Big Beach is easily Maui’s favorite among locals and visitors.
Note: Please use caution for those with children or inexperienced ocean swimmers when there’s large swell. These waves are deceptively powerful and can dump you into the sand without notice.
Scenery wise, you’ll find just under a mile of perfect sand, the beautiful backdrop of lower Haleakala, and water that’s a vibrant deep blue. It is one of the largest beaches on Maui, extending nearly 2/3 of a mile long and 100 yards wide of golden Maui sand.
Locals love Big Beach solely for its greatest asset, the inclined shoreline which allows for the best shore break on Maui. On a crowded day where the swell is pumping, kids and some young adults come to skimboard, body board, or body surf the day away. Surfing with the traditional surfboard is usually not done at this beach because it is not the right conditions.
Visitors can and will visit Big Beach just for the scenery. While others just come to swim, picnic in the shade, or simply sunbathe on the seemingly endless expanse of sand. There are two parking lots that are maintained by the county, while you can also park on the road at your own risk.
