What Is Maui’s Color Festival

Color Festival Originas

Rooted in the traditional Indian Holi Festival, the Color Festival Hawaii is an ode to the 1000 year ritual, but with modern American twists mixed in. The festival gets its name from the throwing of and playing in colored powders, hence the name “Color Festival.”

Not only is the site of vibrant colors swirling in the wind captivating and magical, but it also holds symbolic beauty that goes much deeper. The colors are meant to represent and carry the message of love and happiness to all of those that participate. When the wind swirls the colored powder in the air, the colors begin to create new colors that are you unique to every wisp of wind in the air; this unique mixing of colors is also representative of the diversity in the world and the spirit of inclusion.

Maui Color Festival

Imua Family Services is proud to bring to the Color Festival Hawaii to Maui as a friend-raiser, a family-friendly gathering, and a place for all children to be included.

Last year on April Fools Day 2018 was the first ever Color Festival on Maui and it was an absolute hit! The community couldn’t wait for it to come back for a 2nd year. The event had an awesome line up and even included a special performance by 5 time Grammy award nominee, Amy Hanaiali’i. It was a unique afternoon and I highly recommend checking it out if you’re at all interested.

This year’s event date is set for Saturday, April 13th, 2019 from 1:00-6:00pm. This year’s message is focused around “inclusion,” that we are all under the same rainbow, living and celebrating life together.

The Color Festival will feature nonstop live music leading up throwing to the colors and will include: Rayland Baxter of Nashville TN, DJ Boomshot, Shea Butter & The Cream, and Yum Yum Beast.

The food vendor list for this year is not out yet, but to get a better idea, last year there was The Outrigger Pizza Company, Grandpa Joe’s Cotton Candy, Star Anise Indian Cuisine, Cream B Roll’d Ice Cream, Maui Sweet Cakes and Three’s Bar & Grill all in attendance.

HELPFUL TIPS:

  • Wear white so you can leave colorful!
  • Color paks and souvenir event T-shirts will be available for purchase at the event
  • Wear comfortable shoes/sandals you don’t mind getting full of colorful powder
  • The powder is just colored cornstarch and most of it will just blow right off unless you get wet
  • We suggest you to wash your clothes right after the festival
  • Protecting your eyes with sunglasses or goggles is strongly recommended
  • Bring a dust mask or bandana, especially for those with respiratory issues
  • Bring plastic bags for your dusted clothes or to cover your car seat after event
