Family Fun

4th of July special as Jazz Maui presents live music on two stages in honor of Independence Day! On the makai side of the Lahaina Library and next to Pioneer Inn, the Chop Suey Jazz Orchestra with special will have kick-off the concert at 5 pm. Simultaneously at the Outlets of Maui on Front Street, there will also be a live DJ and Jazz starting at 4:00pm. Then to cap off the night, the fireworks show will light up the west side! Wednesday, July 4th from 4:00pm to 8:00pm.  Where: Front Street, Lahaina.

Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center (QKC) is happy to announce their first ever QKC Cares Kickoff event! The event is centered QKC’s commitment to the community and aims to support their community relationships by increasing public awareness of the mall’s philanthropic efforts as well as enhancing a sense of `ohana among those who visit and work at the mall. The family event will consist of high energy entertainment, interactive keiki activities, fun and educational community booths, and great door prizes. When: Saturday, July 14th  from 10:00am to 1:00pm.

 Benefit Night for Maui Mauka Conservation by enjoying some of Maui’s best pizzas at Flatbread Company in Paia and a portion of the profits will go to conservation education and outreach! Maui Mauka Conservation Awareness aims to connect conservation professionals with non-formal educators, like tourism professionals to educate more people about the island’s natural resources, its unique species, and the initiatives to help preserve the island. When: Wednesday, July 18th from 5:00 pm to 10:00 pm. Where: Flatbread Pizza Company in Paia. 

Veterans of Foreign Wars, Kihei Chapter is holding an All You Can Eat Pancake Breakfast that also includes eggs, sausage, fruits, juice, and coffee! 100% of the proceeds will go towards updating their facilities. Go on down and check out their beachfront structure and see for yourself exactly where donations will be going. VFW focuses on programs that help Veterans transition into post service life, as well as community based activities. When: Saturday, July 28th from 7:00am to 10:00am. The Arts & Culture

Art with Aloha: Kapa to Dye For with Denby Freeland will teach participants how to create the same material that native Hawaiians used back in the day. The workshop will showcase the different types of plant material for dyes, demonstrate the many steps necessary to produce a piece of kapa, and focus on the natural dyes created from native and Polynesian introduced plants. No experience is necessary, but a willingness to get dirty and to experiment is recommended. Tuition: $25 ($32 nonmember) Supply Fee: $15.When: July 6th from 9:00am to 1:00pm. Where: Hui No’eau on Baldwin Avenue. 

Another great cultural learning demonstration in July is the Kulolo Workshop with Namea Hoshino. Kulolo is a local favorite with its root in the Hawaiian culture as a dessert staple made from freshly steamed kalo (taro), coconut milk, sugar, and not much else. The Maui Nui Botanical Garden Kalo Varieties Manager, Namea Hoshino, will teach attendees how to make kulolo three different ways! Cost: $50, or $25 for current garden members. In honor of Madam Pele, join Hawaiian cultural practitioner George Kahumoku Jr. for a deep dive into Hawaiian culture and folklore where the gods are the embodiment of nature, and as our ancestors, connect us to our island lands. Participants will learn Hawaiian protocols, including the native plants that embody Pele and “ho’okupu” or gifts that honor Pele, traditional Hawaiian chants to Pele, and have the chance to learn an accompanying hula. Cost: $50/person. When: Saturday, July 14th from 4:30 pm to 7:00 pm. Where: Island Fresh Cafe in Paia.
