Growing up in Hawaii exposes you to some unique circumstances and one of those aspects is billboard advertising. Maui has no billboard advertisements anywhere on the island. Aside from traffic and safety signs, you have unlimited viewing access to the natural landscape around you and are free to enjoy Maui’s beauty distraction free. Hawaii, along with Vermont, Maine and Alaska are the only 4 states to ban obtrusive billboards.
Hawaii and the West Coast’s Oldest High School
Established in 1831, Maui’s Lahainaluna High School is the eldest school west of the Rocky Mountains and possessed the first printing press in the western United States. Lahaina has a rich history and was once even the capital of Hawaii.
Beach Ownership Rights
According to state law, not one person or entity has the legal right to own a Maui beach nor do they have they the right to restrict access, including “exclusive” beach resorts. All beaches on Maui are open to the public; so no matter where you are on Maui, anyone can enjoy which ever beach they please.
Majestic Haleakala
Mount Haleakala is a staggering 10,023 feet and is regarded the largest dormant volcano in the entire world. What is known as Haleakala Crater is actually a caldera with the summit spanning 21 miles across and 4,000 feet deep, big enough to hold the entire island of Manhattan.
Boar Hunting is Encouraged
Many locals love to hunt and some of the biggest game out there are the wild boards. Not only is it a local tradition, but is is encouraged by state and county officials. The wild pigs are actually an invasive species that wreak havoc on the islands’ native plants.
