Some of South Maui’s Best Attractions

Top 5 Things To Do In South Maui

South Maui is a popular destination among visitors with Kihei, Wailea, and Makena being the most popular among visitors. The south shore is know its reputations as one of sunniest & driest places on the island, the region averages only about a foot of rain per year.

Snorkel at Molokini Crater

Sitting just 2.5 miles off the shore of South Maui, Molokini is a captivating and amazing crescent shaped crater with amazing visibility through its crystal blue waters. The little island holds a reputation as a top ten dive spots in the world! A wonderful collection of aqua life can be found: colorful tropical fish, manta rays, eels, and Hawaiian sea turtles abound-about 250 species of fish (some of which exist nowhere else on Earth). Molokini is also a designated Hawaii State Marine Life and Conservation District. Companies like the Pride of Maui, with over 30 years of experience specialize in snorkeling and diving at Molokini, they know every nook and cranny and will make your adventure unforgettable.

Surf and Stand Up Paddle Board

Ocean conditions in South Maui tend to be somewhat calmer than on the rest of Maui, so it is the perfect place to learn the ropes in a relatively predictable and calm environment. The Cove Beach Park is regarded as a favorite spot for beginners because the waves in the area are known as ankle biters (waves below the knees) and its shallow depth. Swells here have beem known to roll 100 yards or more and are ideal for surfers and SUP-ers to get a hang for it. There are many on site surfboard/SUP rentals and they offer professional advice and some even offer lessons.

Kihei Fourth Friday Town Party

Friday Town Parties are a well known attractions and different communities across Maui each have their own designated Friday. As you can tell by the name, Kiheis event is held every month fourth Friday. There is something for everyone in the family, live music, dancing, delicious food trucks, and a special Youth Zone focused on entertainment for the kids. At the event is a large number of local crafts and artwork for sale, so it’s a great place to pick up some souvenirs. Admission is free and is the perfect evening out for the whole family.

Palauea Bay

Personally, I rank Palauea Bay so highly because of the lack of people that use the beach, let alone even know about it. Palauea means lazy which is exactly how you feel once you get there, the sand is so inviting that you just want to nap there all day. Located in the neighborhood of Keahou at Makena and just down the road from the exclusive One Palauea Bay, this beach is the definition of the perfect Makena Beach. The soft white sand and the glassy ocean water are a joy to relax in, it also does not hurt that you are surrounded by some of the best real estate on the Island. Since the bay is recessed, the wind does not usually whip around like it might at other beaches.

Monkey Pod Kitchen

Monkeypod Kitchen is the ultimate reflection of what Hawaii has to offer. Peter Merriman, owner and culinary visionary places extreme emphasis on the concept of farm-to-table and then incorporates it into his firm belief in, “The craft of food, drink, and merrimaking.”  Chef Peter is as experienced as they come: he is a culinary pioneer, one of the founders of Hawaii Regional Cuisine, and also runs his very prestigious Merriman’s Hawaii Group (a collection of five other restaurants across the island chain).

Every time I decide to stop by Monkeypod, I’m never let down: the place always has a wonderful, fun atmosphere. It has a heart warming sensation, slick wood floors with attractive wood detailing down to the candleholder and salt and pepper shakers. The servers hustle, the mixologists at the bar craft creatively, and the line cooks concentrate as wave after wave of locals and tourists walk in and out.

The Monkeypod Kitchen is located in the Wailea Gateway Place, and is open daily from 11:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.
