Quick and Easy Airport Access

For quite some time now we have been anticipating the new Kahului airport access road.   The project was started in October 2015 as a way to relieve traffic congestion on Dairy Road, which was notorious for traffic during lunch hours. The access road now gives motorists direct access to the airport via Hāna Highway, Kūihelani Highway and Pu‘unēnē Avenue.

Mayor Arakawa says the new road will leave visitors with a lasting impression of Maui, as one of the top destinations in the world, “The entrance way here is a good beginning for us, to be able to promote our community the way it should be promoted, to present our community the way it should be presented.”

This past Saturday, July 23, a small but exciting ceremony celebrated the completion and long overdue opening of the access road.

At the entrance of the new road off Hana Highway, an eye catching lava rock wall sign accompanied by a waterfall reminiscent of Maui’s natural beauty welcomes visitors to the Valley Isle and leaves them with a lasting impression.

The waterfall isn’t only there for curb appeal, “The water feature itself is dual purpose not only is it aesthetically pleasing it’s also very functional because it s a reservoir and that non potable water will be used to irrigate the landscaping all over the airport property,” said Tim Sakahara, Hawai’i Department of Transportation Director of Public Affairs.

The Kahului airport does some major business, it averages 8,000 passenger arrivals a day. It also rents the most cars of all the fifteen airports in the state with an average of 2,200 cars rented per day. That’s more than twice the amount of Honolulu International Airport!

The best part is it didn’t cost tax-payers a single dime! The $56 million project was funded entirely by tourists through rental car facility charges which are $4.50 per car.
