Best Maui Spots to Watch the Sunset

Maui’s Beauty at Sunset

As we all know, the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, so there are certain places across Maui that make the most of the sunset. Obviously anywhere in West Maui is a prime location, but also South Maui is another great place to watch the sun dip behind the horizon and even certain Upcountry locales provide epic sunset viewing destinations.

Haleakala Summit

Haleakala, which translates to “house of the sun” isn’t just known for its world famous sunrises or for one of its enchanting hiking trails, but it is one of the most underrated and overlooked (most likely because of drive time) spots to catch a Maui sunset! Haleakala is Maui’s own 10,000 foot volcano and is regarded as the largest dormant volcano in the world; to put it in perspective, the entire area of Manhattan could fit in the crater (actually a caldera) of Haleakala alone. On specials days when weather permits, the summit is above the clouds and captures explosive oranges and pastel pinks that seem to float on a sea of white fluffy clouds. Allow for a 45 minute drive up Crater Road and most definitely pack warm!

Ka’anapali Beach A.K.A. Black Rock

This beach is well known by two different names because of the landmark commonly associated with the beach, to locals it is known as Black Rock. By visitors, its known as Ka’anapali Beach, it is a 3 mile long stretch of white sand housing Black Rock on the northern end by the Sheraton Hotel. On numerous occasion the beach has been rated as one of the best beaches in the world by travel publications such as Condé Nast magazine.

From anywhere on the beach is the perfect place to watch the sunset. I recommend going in the late afternoon for a nice swim and then staying until sunset. Nearby is Whalers Village and convenient choice to grab some food or snacks afterwards.

Plantation House

Famous for its panoramic and unparalleled sunset vistas over the verdant fairways of the Plantation Course and out towards the island of Molokai, the Plantation House is the go to spot for a sunset dinner in Kapalua. The spacious, open air dining room allows for cool tropical breezes to flow while the warmth and ambience of the Plantation House make for an unforgettable sunset view.  The Plantation House Restaurant is located at the Kapalua Plantation course, known for hosting the PGA tour while on island.

Big Beach A.K.A. Makena Beach

Easily Maui’s most favorite beach among visitors and residents, Big Beach stands head and shoulders above the rest. You’ll find just under a mile of perfect sand, the beautiful backdrop of lower Haleakala, and water that’s a vibrant blue green. Visitors usually just come to swim or snorkel an experience Maui’s most pristine waters, picnic in the shade, or simply sunbathe on the seemingly endless expanse of sand. But the sunsets here are absolutely breathe taking. I can’t even count the number of sunsets i’ve spent at Big Beach and each one is just as pretty as the first.

Ka’anapali Sunset Sail

Probably the most fun way to experience the sunset is on a sunset cruise, there are a variety of comapnies that offer such a service; it is one the most romantic ways to experience the beauty of a Maui sunset. Aboard some vessels, chefs prepare an assortment of hot and cold appetizers that are guaranteed to make the cruise that much better. With breathtaking views of Moloka‘i and Lana‘i, spinner dolphins and flying fish, a Maui sunset sail is a relaxing and fun experience.
