Launch of Kalama Kai Condo Lottery

Everyone Wins at Kalama Kai!

The initial lottery for the workforce housing project, Kalama Kai was held yesterday (2/13).  I met my client Jonathan, with his glowingly proud parents, at the office for the drawing. We had been strategizing all week about which locations would offer the most privacy and chance at an ocean view. He kept his list of preferred unit numbers folded up tightly, so no other applicant could catch a glimpse. The smell of popcorn in the air helped to ease some of the tension, when the 1:00 time for the drawing came around the mood was further lightened when everyone realized there were only 5 applicants for the 12 available properties. Everyone who wanted a condo was going to get one.

Jonathan selected ball number 31 which was promptly put into the ball mixer and spun around with the additional applicants numbers and a few blank balls for good measure. The first ball that was chosen was blank. The second, blank. The third, blank. Come on! After pulling three blanks, the next ball had to be one of the applicant’s numbers. Number 31 was the first applicant ball to be drawn and I couldn’t help but do a little jump for joy!

Jonathan would get to be the first person in Kalama Kai to select his location choice. As he went up to put a star on his top floor, corner unit his Mom leaned over to me and said “Today is my Birthday, February 13, I knew when he drew 31 it would be a winner.”

The best part of drawing is that it seemed everyone got one of their top rated locations, including the applicant who picked last and still secured the only 1 bedroom condo in the community. We ended the lottery by signing contract documents. We will formally open escrow after the holiday weekend.

When I first approached Jonathan about this opportunity last month, he wasn’t actively thinking about purchasing his first home on Maui. With the help of supportive parents and an opportunity for affordable workforce housing he is now in escrow on a condo he will call home.

There are still 7 properties available in Kalama Kai at the pricing for applicants who qualify for the below moderate-income level. These are 3 bedroom 2 bathroom condos, with potential ocean views, one block from cove beach and South Kihei Road for $372,600.

Kalama Kai is some of the best value in new construction. If you think you or someone you know would qualify for workforce housing call Erin today!
