Hawaii Medical Marijuana Business to Have Major Impact on Real Estate market

A Bright Future on Maui’s Horizon

The Hawaii Department of Medical Marijuana Dispensary applications that became available on Jan 11th are due this Friday Jan 29th. Applications have to be submitted online today, along with the $5,000 application fee.

The medical marijuana dispensary law, Chapter 329D, HRS, allows the Department of Health to award a total of 8 licenses in the state. 3 licenses for Oahu, 2 dispensary licenses for the Big Island and the County of Maui, and 1 dispensary license for Kauai. Each dispensary licensee will be allowed to operate up to 2 production centers and two retail-dispensing locations.

These licenses will be issued no later than April 15th and the dispensaries will likely be up and running by mid July.

Grown Here…Not Flown Here

This is huge for the state of Hawaii.  Back in 2000, we were actually the very first state to officially legalize medical marijuana in the US.  That being said, patients have had a difficult time getting their cannabis because the law previous only allowed them to grown their own.  As you can image, it’s difficult to grow anything on your own if you live in the middle of a big city like Honolulu. This law however was changed last July, and is meant to help patients get the medicine they need.

The state of Hawaii’s medical marijuana business could be worth more than 300 million dollars by the end of 2018.  This is going to have a major impact on the commercial and industrial real estate markets in Hawaii.  We already have one of the lowest vacancy rates for commercial space in the country (I’ve recently heard as low as 1-2% on Oahu, compared to the 7% national average), and now it’s going to get even tighter.  In my professional opinion, the medical marijuana movement should have an overall positive impact on our local Real Estate market as well as the greater economy in Hawaii.

I’m so grateful that we’re finally going to have dispensaries on Maui this summer.  The bottom line is that we need patients to be able to easily access their medicine.  Period.

Me and Naia! All smiles 🙂

Our dear friends Sam and Sonya have a beautiful daughter named Naia that just turned 1 in December.  Naia was born with a very rare form of epilepsy that was causing her to have as much as 20+ seizures a day.  Seeing Naia struggle so much in her short life has been very difficult for all of us.  I love her so much. She’s a very strong child whose made some significant leaps and bounds lately.  Since her parents have experimented with 8 different CBD Marijuana strains (CBD stands for cannabidiol, a non-psychoactive cannabis constituent), Naia’s seizure progress has diminished down to about 1day/week with 1-4 episodes lasting no more than 3 minutes.  Please keep this little girl in your thoughts and prayers. She’s a fighter!
