Maui Eats: The Sayles Team Chows Down

Sayles Team Suggestions

If there is one thing that the Sayles Team can unanimously agree on, it’s that we all love our food. A lot of our office gossip consists of unbelievable food we stumble across in our daily lives, whether it’s: a mango on the side of the road, a spice rub the significant other made, a local mom and pop shops’ specialty, or a new restaurant in town; whatever it is, somebody from the team is on it.

The team lives across the island and spend their times free enjoying diverse sets of activities, so amongst the team we have a lot of lifestyles covered: a couple expecting their fist kid, a family of four with two boys, a married couple enjoying their first few years of marriage, a family moving into their first home, a team member in college, and baby boomers enjoying life’s spoils.

Open one of the many glossy Maui magazines you are certain to find photographs of centered sashimi on ivory plates or garlands of greens nesting a delectable piece of Ono.  I enjoy Maui’s fine dining for special occasions but there are some days the beach is too much fun to stop for a long lunch break. This is a selection of restaurants that will get you fed with a tasty meal and back in to fun in the sun in a split.

Best Lunch To-Go on Maui

North Shore Maui

Haiku Espresso (Haiku Cannery off Haiku Road): On the way to an early morning surf session or need a little buzz after a relaxing yoga class, Haiku espresso will get your am coffee fix in a jiff.  Don’t be fooled by the humble food truck parked in the Haiku Cannery parking lot.  Their lattes are some of the best on island. Pair their organic coffee with a homemade pastry for the road and your day will be off to a great start.

Mana Foods is a cool little eclectic market in Paia

Mana Foods hot bar (49 Baldwin Ave, Paia): Mana Foods is one of the best natural/organic food stores on the island. Their hot bar offers a daily selection of vegetarian, gluten free and carnivore friendly options. Grab a quick sandwich to go, raw lasagna or a super food salad. There are enough options to make everyone in your group happy.

South Side Maui

Hawaiian Moons, a quick and healthy option 5 minutes from Ho’olei

Hawaiian Moons hot bar (2411 South Kihei Road): Located just across from Kamaole beach 1, Hawaiian Moons is South Maui’s natural/organic grocery store centrally located off of South Kihei Road.  If you want to know what’s on their lunch menu, just check out their Facebook page before swinging by.  With a daily salad bar and hot entrees you are sure to find healthy lunch right across the street from the beach.

Maui Tacos Kihei (2411 South Kihei Road): If you are feeling like something a little more substantial, an overstuffed burrito smothered in enchilada sauce, head to Maui Tacos. Specializing in “Maui Mex” Maui Tacos features Menu items named for some of Maui’s most famous surf spots.

Joy’s Place does a little bit of everything

Joy’s Place (1993 South Kihei Road):  Want a quick, healthy lunch with a smile? Joy’s Place is the restaurant for you. They offer smoothies, juices, sandwiches, raw, vegetarian options and the friendliest staff in South Maui. My favorite is the #1 turkey sandwich on sprouted bread with avocado sprouts and shredded carrots.  Yum! For a filling meal that will still make you feel good about getting back into a suit after lunch, check out Joy’s.

Whalers General Store shops at Wailea (3750 Wailea Alanui): If you are looking for a tasty sandwich to go in Wailea, the Whalers General Store is the spot for you.  Don’t be tempted by their chilled sandwich section with easy grab and go options. It is worth the wait for one of their freshly made sandwiches. In addition, they offer snacks, beverages and everything you need to stock up for a long day at the beach.
