Maui Tech Park on the Rise

The Hub of Maui’s Tech and Scientific Community

Located just above the exclusive and luxurious Hokulani Golf Villas sits the Maui Research and Technology Park. The site is currently only operating at 10% of the max efficiency level. Right now, there are only 20 high tech professional service companies that call the ark home. The small number shouldn’t fool you, there are about 400 people are employed actively in the Tech Park in high-paying, high technology jobs. Impressively, it is estimated that $150 million flows through companies, the Park, and the projects each year.

The Park houses elite and cutting edge companies like Boeing, Pacific Defense Solutions, and Oceanit, all with respectable research, engineering, and development sectors. The redesigned master plan is close to completion and will harness the full 400 acres under the Research and Technology Park’s autonomy. There are 5 state of the art lab and office buildings where these companies operate.

The original goal of the Park was an effort to make significant steps forwards diversify Maui County’s economy away from heavy dependence on tourism and agriculture. The aim of the Park was to nurture and create a stable leading sector alongside the already established agriculture and tourism industries. Given the island’s decline in agricultural sector and volatile tourist economy, the Tech Park is striving to add a host of valuable and sought after technology jobs to stabilize the economy. The goal of economic diversification remains more important now than ever.

The Park’s mission is still continuing to establish itself; after twenty years of development, the Park still has plenty of room to expand. It has been successful as a magnet for already established businesses, but also does embrace and accelerate start-up businesses by nurturing local talent and ideas.

Such as the the Maui Brew Co. who calls the Tech Park home. The new Kihei location is set to house a variety of environmentally friendly features from PV parking lot lighting, electric vehicle charging stations, solar thermal water, led lighting, and more. Marrero says “it’s the right thing to do and it’s also fiscally responsible.” The total time invested in the new project, from start to finished, is believed to be over 2 years at an estimated to cost of close to $15 million. The new brewpub and brewery will add close to 80 new jobs.
