If you live on Maui and you are not taking advantage of Maui’s natural beauty, you are sorely missing out. The thing I love about Maui in particular is that it encourages an active lifestyle: the beach is never more than 20 minutes away, hikes are in abundance, and for the most part it is always sunny. However, those are more of a leisurely active lifestyle. For those who love to compete or are avid runners, Maui hosts their annual Maui Marathon on Sunday, September 21. They also host a half marathon for those who do not want to commit their whole day.

Sure it’s a sizzler, temperature in the mid to high 80’s, and 90 percent humidity, but it is absolute fun! The race is set to start at 5:o0 a.m. for both the half and full marathon. Do expect the course to run immediately adjacent to the highway, which the race organizers do cone off, but don’t close entirely because it is the only way in and out of the West Side.

Please do note that the marathon has a limit of 2,000 runners, and 1,000 is the limit for the half marathon. So be sure to sign up quickly if you plan to do the race.

The full marathon kicks off in Central Maui, near the Maui airport, and proceeds through cane fields, then through the center of the island. Once clear of the cane fields, this is where the marathon earns its beauty. For the last 15 or so miles the course runs northward along the deep blue Pacific Ocean on a slightly downhill course, which then flattens out as you hit Lahaina. Potentially if the waves are big, they could be crashing directly onto the course.

Along the course are water stations with of course water, Gatorade, and defizzed, diluted coke. At a few of the rest stations they provide refreshing and cooling ice towels. Crossing the finish line at Whalers Village is treats galore, rewarded by platters full of fruit, whipped cream covered strawberry frappicinos, Jamba Juice smoothies, and other goodies.
