There’s Nothing Like the Maui Brewing Co.

Always Supporting Local

The Maui Brewing Co. is edging closer with every passing day to the grand opening (which should by any day now) of their spectacular new location in the Maui Tech Park, which just so happens to be located slightly above the Hokulani Golf Villas for sale. Due to popular demand and backed up orders because of a limited operation size, Owner Garret Marrero, “Knew we were going to be growing,” and decided to expand production to meet the company’s growth.

Founded back in 2005 with his wife, Melanie, the two operate a seven-barrel brewpub in Kahana and a 25-barrel production brewery and canning facility in Lahaina. However, they plan to phase out its 10,000-square-foot brewery in Lahaina once the new facility in Kihei is completed.

Marrero said he chose Kihei partially because “we got a good deal and have always wanted to open a south side brewpub” and the need to meet the business’ growing demands. “Right now we’re trailing our orders by 50 percent,” he said, adding that a new brewery will allow the company to meet its current demand and “have room to continue expanding.”

Although a major focal point of the expansion is a brand spanking new brewery, the Kihei location will have an onsite distillery, tasting room, and eventually a BrewPub. “It’s going very well,” Marrero said about his business. Attributing to the success of Maui Brewing Co. he said, “People want to support local. They want to support something that’s authentic to the islands.” Their beers are sold in 11 states and four countries. The company also employs about 63 people at its Kahana and Lahaina facilities.

Marrero expects the new brewery will produce about 45,000 barrels in it’s first year, with plenty of room to ramp up production if necessary. The added capacity will be used to meet increased demand for Maui Brewing Company’s current flagship beers (Big Swell IPA, Bikini Blonde, and CoCoNut PorTeR) as well as add new seasonal beers.

The new Kihei location is set to house a variety of environmentally friendly features from PV parking lot lighting, electric vehicle charging stations, solar thermal water, led lighting, and more.  Marrero says “it’s the right thing to do and it’s also fiscally responsible.” The total time invested in the new project, from start to finished, is believed to be over 2 years at an estimated to cost of close to $15 million. The new brewpub and brewery will add close to 80 new jobs.

Maui Brewing Co. prides itself as a “truly Hawaiian brewery,” leaving nothing ro waste. The company has been Hawaii’s biggest brewery presence since 2010. Beers are packaged with eco-friendly materials that are manufactured on Oahu and designed by local Maui artists. The cans have the added bonus of better protection of the beer from light and oxygen damage, both are known compromise the taste. And finally, a unique recyclable plastic carrying device is used to hold the cans, with the spent grain from beer production donated to local ranchers for cattle feed and composting.
