Maui’s Polo Scene

Polo Sundays With the Maui Polo Club

Every Sunday from April 13th till June 29th (this year’s season) is spring 2014 arena polo season on Maui! Of course the official dates vary by year, but for the most part the Maui Polo Club plans their polo season to start in the second half of April and run through the end of June. The matches are played above King Keulike High School just off the Old Haleakala Highway at the Manduke Baldwin Arena.

Spending Sunday at polo is a change of pace from the usual activities on Maui. You get a chance to see Maui’s hard nose, talented polo players putting it all on the line for their sport. It’s an indulgence in the upcountry lifestyle, throwing on your pair of cowboy boots and heading out the door to enjoy a few chuckers (equivalent to quarters) of galloping horses and tantalizing mallet play.

Personally, I like going to the polo to watch the matches, but what makes spending Sunday at polo worth it is the vibrant upcountry atmosphere. After each game, the club celebrates by having a party with food, drinks, music, and fun for all. Dress is casual to island dressy, you’ll find all varieties at Maui polo.

Another unique aspect to Maui’s polo culture is the tailgating environment, trucks will backup their tailgates so that it faces the field with a canopy tent overhanging to create the perfect seats. Tailgaters usually have BBQ rigs hooked up to their truck to turn out some tasty treats.

Gates typically open around 11:00 a.m.-noon for Junior Polo, but it varies weekly. The arena features grandstand for viewing if that is your taste, if not it also has lots of room for tailgating around the field. I suggest to pack a lunch or you can hit up the food tent. I definitely recommend to come early and get the best spots. The lineup of games is as follows: Junior polo, then a tournament match, and a club game to end the day. The adult games begin around 1:30 p.m.
