A Special Weekend in Kula

The Holy Ghost Feast is held every Pentecost weekend, which is the weekend dedicated to commemorating the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and other followers of Jesus Christ.

The event is meant to be the main fundraiser for the parish, which also includes a few other up country churches, Our Lady Queen of Angels Church in Keokea and St. James the Less Mission of Ulupalakua.

The church celebrates the weekend by offering a free laulau meal which symbolizes carrying on Queen Elizabeth’s tradition of feeding her cherished subjects. The church will serve to anyone who comes out and supports Kula’s Catholic community. The annual Holy Ghost Feast will start at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 7 and go till 9:00 p.m.

On Sunday the 8th, the event will take place from 9:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. The Holy Ghost Mission is a historic octagonal church located at 4300 Lower Kula Road just down the road from Kula Bistro, an up country favorite.

The laulau plates will be served in shifts starting at 11:15 a.m. Spending Sunday at the feast would be extra special, as Sunday is a tradition that recalls Queen Isabel’s (St. Elizabeth) piety and devotion to her people in 14th century Portugal.

The tradition dates back to the 1800’s when the Portuguese who came to Hawaii brought with them devotion to the Holy Ghost and the traditions of St. Elizabeth. Many believe that the Holy Ghost Church’s octagonal shape is related to the shape of her crown.

Special mass services will be start at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday and 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, both services will be followed by a procession led by the Holy Ghost Feast Queen.

There will also be a live auction that begins 6 p.m. Saturday and picks back up the next day at 11:00 a.m. Auction items include golf packages, hotel stays, restaurant gift cards, boat excursions, health and beauty gift certificates, home-made baked goods, and many other items.

Another special event that will be held on Sunday is the livestock auction and is scheduled to start at 2:30 p.m.

Parking will be available at the community center. Maui Bus “Kula Villager” stops at the Holy Ghost Church.
