Wailea’s Favorite Week

Every year for a week in June is the Maui Film Festival at Wailea or a.k.a the Wailea Film Festival. I personally always mark my calendar because the film festival is a perfect way to enjoy the warm Wailea nights under the stars. The movies throughout the festival are a combination of short films, feature films, animated films, new releases, sneak previews, locally produced pieces, and internationally acclaimed award winners. They are presented across multiple venues around the island, but the favorite has to be The Celestial Cinema in Wailea. There are also a few gala parties/festivities throughout the resort.

Specifically, there are two premier gala parties to attend. The first is the Taste of Wailea, where food and wine highlight the creations of Wailea’s top chefs infused with the islands agricultural bounty. And the second is the Taste of Chocolate (a chocoholic’s fantasy), where Maui’s best pastry chefs show off their most delectable sweet sensations. Escape into dessert paradise with dishes like chocolate ganache cupcakes, coconut profiteroles, white chocolate cheesecake with Grand Marnier syrup, or avocado ice cream!

The Celestial Cinema is held at the festival’s most prized venue, Wailea Gold Golf courses’ driving range. Perched at the foot of Mount Haleakala, the location highlights the romance of beautiful South Maui. This spectacular outdoor venue projects onto a 50 foot screen which is powered by the sun. Solar energy runs the venue; everything from the lights on the pathways to the showing of the films.

The festival is entirely an open-air evening theatre, the Celestial Cinema is located under the pretty Wailea stars lit by the moon and powered by the Sun! The festival also features some talented actors/actresses, including James Marsden, Elizabeth Banks, and Josh Radnor just to name a few.

Highlights of the Festival

The Wailea Film Festival will be held during the week of June 4-8, below are some of the more favored events. Movie times will vary, as well as their location; there are four different locations of which movies will be played. Please pay very close attention to the location, so I recommend planning in a few days in advance. For more details about specific movie times and locations, please click here. There are a variety of ticket prices and passes, be sure to check out which package would be most suitable.The Opening Night Twilight Reception is personally one of my favorites. It’s always the perfect place to kick off the movie festival. Attending this year’s opening reception at the Hotel Wailea is the perfect way to celebrate hump day in paradise! Hotel Wailea is conveniently located from two of Wailea’s finest neighborhoods, the Wailea Golf Vistas and the Wailea Golf Estates. Both neighborhoods provide ideal home bases for daily activities as the Shops at Wailea, various spas, and beach access are all within a ten minute drive. Also, both neighborhoods are gated to add extra privacy for your comfort.
