Visiting Iao Valley is something that I always suggest to my clients. Aside from it’s beauty, the valley is rich in Hawaiian history and is integral in the unification of the Hawaiian islands. The visit is only a couple of hours adventure so doing the hike in the morning is a great idea.

Towering emerald mountains line your drive into the valley floor of Iao Valley State Park. The winding road into the park is a time machine transporting you back in time to when Ali’is (Ah-lee-e) still walked the valley. Located in Central Maui just west of Wailuku, lies the tropical and tranquil 4,000-acre, 10-mile long state park. Famed for housing one of Maui’s most recognizable landmarks, the 1,200-foot Iao Needle! The needle overlooks Iao stream and is an ideal attraction for easy hiking and sightseeing.

Aside from the abundance of different shades of green and the natural tropical beautiful, Iao Valley is scared for its richt historical significance. It was here in 1790 at the Battle of Kepaniwai that King Kamehameha I (Hawaii’s greatest Alii) clashed with Maui’s army in his quest to unite the islands. Even with Iao Needle serving as a lookout point, Kamehameha defeated Maui’s forces in a ferocious battle that ultimately changed the course of Hawaiian history.

For those deciding to hike Iao Valley, there are well marked, paved pedestrian paths leading from the parking lot to the top of Iao Needle. The ridge-top lookout provides incredible views of the valley. On gloomy days the needle is sometimes covered in clouds, and on beautiful sunny days the needle can be seen from various oarts of the island. Families can also take a rainforest walk or explore interactive exhibits at the Hawaii Nature Center, which is also located within Iao Valley.
