Monkey Pod: Farm to Table Goodness

Understanding the Craft

Monkeypod Kitchen is the ultimate reflection of what Hawaii has to offer. Peter Merriman, owner and culinary visionary places extreme emphasis on the concept of farm-to-table and then incorporates it into his firm belief in, “The craft of food, drink, and merrimaking.”  Chef Peter is as experienced as they come: he is a culinary pioneer, one of the founders of Hawaii Regional Cuisine, and also runs his very prestigious Merriman’s Hawaii Group (a collection of five other restaurants across the island chain).

Every time I decide to stop by Monkeypod, I’m never let down: the place always has a wonderful, fun atmosphere. It has a heart warming sensation, slick wood floors with attractive wood detailing down to the candleholder and salt and pepper shakers. The servers hustle, the mixologists at the bar craft creatively, and the line cooks concentrate as wave after wave of locals and tourists walk in and out.

If you decide to head over for a late lunch, try an aim for happy hour at 3:00 p.m. to 5:30. Or if you got stuck at the beach too long, then the nightly hour from 9:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. may work for you. They offer appetizers at 50 percent off and pizzas are only $7.

I believe in Hawaii you really only need three things to have a great time: tasty drinks, scrumptious food, and great company; Monkeypod has all that in one place! Chef Peter would almost certainly take it personally if you were to take a pass on a few drinks. They boast a magnificent array of cocktails and boast some of the best micro brews. Only the best mixologist work at the bar as they have crafted their recipes very specifically and thoroughly; they will politely decline any vodka or gin substitutions.

The Monkeypod Kitchen is located in the Wailea Gateway Place, and is open daily from 11:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.
