The Maui Invitational 2013: An Annual Island Tradition

Sun, Surf, and Hoops

The EA Sports Maui Invitational has long been a staple of the Valley Isle since the eighties, and this year marks the 30th year as one of the nation’s premier early-season college basketball tournament. The invitational is held with prestige by many and is coveted by all teams for its tropical location. Every year, college hoops fans eagerly anticipate Thanksgiving weekend, when turkey and football aren’t the only things featured.

Held at the Lahaina Civic Center, crowds pack the close-quartered gym which can accommodate up to 2,500 people. Over the years, the County of Maui has invested over $1 Million worth of improvements,  including: a new playing floor, updated roll-away bleachers, new scoreboards, enhanced arena lighting, and permanent air conditioning.

What makes Lahaina special?

Lahaina was a traditional whaling village and is famed for its history and deep traditions. It used to be the playground for Hawaiian royalty, a place of transition for missionaries, and was once the capitol of Maui. The town is more uncommonly known as Lele which meant “relentless sun” in Hawaiian. For a great idea of this town’s history, explore Lahaina´s Historic Trail or visit the Banyan Tree, the 136 year-old tree the size of a city block.

The Food Scene

Part of experiencing Hawaii is enjoying the local food. The vendors will feature many unique dishes that may even become your favorite new thing. Local favorites include Kalua Pig and cabbage (tender pork roasted in an imu [underground oven heated by hot stones] lined with banana leaves), Poi (a Hawaiian kind of pudding, made with the taro root, with a delectable tinge of tartness), Mahi-Mahi (fresh caught white fish meat with a mild taste), Teriyaki Beef (strips of beef marinated in teriyaki sauce for a local flare), and Mai Tais (tropical rum based cocktail). These are all delectable island treats and should be tried at least once!
