New Hotel Planned for Wailea

Turning to Maui’s Luxury Market

Alexander and Baldwin is set to retain their label as the sole thriving survivor of Hawaii’s original “Big Five,” even after the company’s inception more than a century ago (circa 1870).  A&B Properties, a wholly owned subsidiary of Alexander and Baldwin, focuses their efforts on maximizing their real estate portfolio (including but not limited to holdings on: a majority of the Hawaiian islands and commercial space on both the east and west coast).

A&B is planning for sweeping changes in Wailea with a brand new planned luxury hotel. Details have been completely under wraps, as neither a budget nor a name hotel has been decided upon. Planned to accompany the hotel is a residential project.

To get the initial ball rolling, Senior Vice President Grant Chun, has confirmed that they are scrapping the original plan for a 64,000-square-foot commercial center, which had already been approved for a SMA (special management area permit).

The residential project will span 13 acres and be divided into two separate parts, one being a single-family home community and a multifamily unit complex. The single-family home community will be sold in nine individual vacant lots and the multifamily complex a condo community.

The two neighborhoods will border the hotel, with the idea of the resort to be partially encircled by the two communities. The entire project is located below Wailea Ike Drive and above the Wailea Tennis Club.

Chun belives, “Its been a long time coming,” with the original plans for the project approved back in 2009. Chun went further on to say, “(The homes) will be an entry way to the resort.”

The hotel is planned sit on 6 plus acres and could potentially be and all-suite hotel, closely resembling the design of The Fairmont Kealani. The developers are keen on being close to the heart of  Wailea, Chun said, they plan on desiging the hotel so that is a short walking distance to the Wailea Town Center.  Plus Joe’s Bar and Grill (one of the most lay back restaurants to dine in Wailea) is just a stone’s throw away!

The company is planning to focus first on the hotel and then shift its focus to the residential side of the project. The plans are set to be presented to the commission early in the first quarter of 2014.
