Outdoor Activities To Kick Off The Perfect Maui Summer

Hit The Summer Swell

There’s nothing quite like the feeling of catching the perfect wave! Experiencing surfing or stand up paddling for yourself is something I highly recommend for all, it’s also a challenging and fun core work out. For beginners, I suggest checking out “The Cove”, it’s a calm and shallow beach in Kihei geared towards anyone looking to take a quick lesson; there are also numerous surfboard rental companies that set up directly on the beach, so it’s a hassle free experience.

Hike the Lava Fields at La Perouse Bay

All the way past Maui’s famous Big Beach is La Perouse Bay or the Ahihi Kinau Reserve, it a long stretch of lava from the last eruption of Mount Haleakala in 1790. The Ahihi nature reserve is glimpse back into time, there are cultural artifacts in the lava fields, walls of shelters built by Hawaiians, and a small blow hole. Not only are there natural wonders on the mauka (mountain) side of the reserve, but also the makai (ocean) side is full of interesting ocean life. For more exploration, dotted along the shoreline are tide pools teeming with tiny fish, crabs, and shell fish.

Horseback Rides

Across the island, there are numerous choices to go horseback riding. The main difference among the stables is the location and the views they offer. Upcountry stables will offer a cooler climate and country vibes. Northwest stables on the west side of Maui near Kapalua will provide misty trails through green valleys. Lastly, south maui stables out towards Makena will offer views of the ocean and mountain views of Ulupalukua.

Under the Sea: Atlantis Submarine

Dive 100 feet under the sea and explore Maui through the underwater lense of Atlantis and discover some of Maui’s marine marvels. The underwater vessel is the most technologically advanced submarine of its kind and carries up to 48 passengers to depths of 100 feet and beyond. The submarine is actually docked outside of the Lahaina Harbor and a short speed boat ride out to the vessel is needed so you really get two experiences in one!

Hike the Valley Isle

Hiking around Maui is always a great idea, I love hiking for the peace of mind it brings and the experience of taking in Maui’s natural beauty. When you go on a hike, it allows your mind to slow down and get away from the negative energy of being constantly “plugged in” to today’s world. I have a lot of favorite hikes, some secret and some open to the public, but I have complied my suggestions on a previous blog post: “Visitor Friendly Hikes Around the Valley Isle”

Zip Lining to Happiness

Skyline Eco-Adventures is the United States’ first ever zip line company! Founded almost 15 years ago back in 2002 on Maui, Hawaii, by father and son team, Buck and Danny Boren (Danny is actually a friend and alumni of our alma mater Seabury Hall, Maui’s finest college prep highscool). Their first location, the Haleakala Skyline Tour, sits on the historic location Haleakala Ranch in beautiful upcountry Maui. They also boast locations on the West Side of Maui, out towards Ka’anapli. In addition to the two locations on Maui, they boast locations in Alaska as well as Poipu, Kauai.

Secluded Peace: Travaasa Hotel

Long considered one of the most gorgeous resorts in the island chain, Travaasa Hana (formerly known as Hotel Hana Maui) has kicked it up another notch. In fact, it was even voted the “No. 1 Resort in Hawaii” in Condé Nast Traveler‘s 2011 Reader’s Choice Awards. Located in the town of Hana on the eastern tip of Maui, Travaasa Hana is the first resort on the island to greet the rising sun. Set amid rolling grass fields and palm trees above Kaihalulu Bay, Travaasa Hana will immerse you in the “real” Hawaii.
