Sayles Team Tips To An Awesome Maui Visit

Respect the Aina

01 Kula Highway

Maui’s natural beauty

Traveling to Hawaii is like visiting a living memorial. The islands are rich in culture, history and people. The Hawaiians believed once you pass on, you don’t transcend into to the heavens but rather continue on to live on earth in different forms of nature thus tying them to the earth forever.  ‘Mana’ is the word used to describe the spiritual energy and healing powers of Hawaii, but it is oftentimes overlooked by tourists and even residents. The mana of the islands should be respected. Today we can show our respect to the ainas (islands) through simple gestures, awareness or even just a mindset. To those who are merely passing through, it’s important as a visitor to show respect to the islands.

Cursed Souvenirs

Okay, cursed may be a stretch, but there are a few superstitions locals have about certain gifts. It might be neat to take home a bottle of sand from the beach, a uniquely formed rock, or a pretty colored shell, but these may not be the best idea. I’m sure if you Google stories about people taking rocks from Hawaii, you’ll find all kinds of stories; but I do know friends of friends who have experienced misfortunes because they took home the wrong souvenirs with them. I suggest sticking to the shirts, posters, or other memorabilia sold in the stores.

Trespassing

A lot of Maui’s beauty lies in secluded and private places which keeps it untouched and raw of natural beauty. However, many of those beautiful places lie on private property unless it’s a state park. Some of the guidebooks and travel websites might suggest places where you’ll be trespassing on residents’ land. This not only touches the idea of respecting the aina, but also respecting the people of the aina and those that have their lawful right to their own parcel of land. So please just be aware of whose land you may be trespassing on if you decide to do extra exploring.

Leaving Valuables in the Car

Hawaii has its glamorous reputation, but there are plenty of things that don’t get pointed out to you until it happens. It’s sad to say, but theft happens in Hawaii every day; on the bright side, Maui doesn’t have much crime other than theft. Visitors often get targeted because it is easy to identify a rental car from a local car, rental cars also have bar code stickers on the back window which are a main give away. In rural parts of Maui like the road to Hana, there are people who live in the area and rely on breaking into cars to make a living; so please remember to either take your valuables with you or at least hide them in the trunk or tucked away.

Not Wearing Proper Footwear

It might seem cool and convenient to go barefoot in Hawaii, but in reality it probably might be something you ultimately regret. I myself also get caught up in the lifestyle and decide to go barefoot, but I always end up regretting it for some reason or another. There have been plenty of times when I have decided to go to the beach at the last minute without slippers and the walk from the parking lot onto to the sand was not a pleasant experience. Here in Hawaii, where the sun is constantly out means surface areas are always heating up and walking on the cement and sand can be a treacherous task. Not to mention, Keawe trees often line a fair amount of beaches like Big Beach and stepping on a Keawe thorn is something you do not want to feel for yourself.
