Enjoy Maui Beauty at No Cost!
Haleakala National Park
Haleakala National Park, or also affectionately known as the ‘House of the Sun,’ ascends to a staggering 10,023 feet above sea level. Haleakala is technically taller than Mount Everest if measured from the bottom of the ocean. You can find this volcanic beauty by traveling way of Kula and on through to the Haleakala National Park in Upcountry Maui. However, although the article title says free, admission is only $10 and is good for three days! Plus this admission price also grants you access to Maui’s treasure 7 Sacred Pools.
Big Beach
Located in South Maui and just off of Makena Alanui Road is quite possibly the best beach in Hawaii. Big Beach stands heads and shoulders above some of Maui’s best beaches. You’ll find just under a mile of perfect sand, the beautifu backdrop of lower Haleakala, and water that’s a virbant blue green. It is one of the largest beaches in Maui, extending nearly 2/3 of a mile long and 100 yards wide of golden Maui sand. The tourists usually just come to swim or snorkel an experience Maui’s most pristine waters, picnic in the shade, or simply sunbathe on the seemingly endless expanse of sand. There are two parking lots that are maintained by the county.
Road To Hana
The Road to Hana is a truly magical experience unique along East Maui. With 620 curves and 59 bridges along the way, the incredible 56-mile drive is all about the journey, not the destination. Along the way to Hana are some of the most incredible waterfalls and coastal areas on the island. There are many roadside stands offering snacks and smoothies to ease the ride. But before you embark, make sure you have a full tank of gas as Paia is the last town in with a gas station before the Road to Hana. Also as a side note, please be courtesy to the locals and let them pass as they are more accustomed to driving the road.
Lahaina Town
Lahaina Town’s main attraction is Front Street which borders Lahaina Harbor and is an absolute gorgeous waterfront with views towards Molokai and Lanai.Lahaina is one of the most historic parts of Maui and does a terrific job of blending the history of its cultures with the progress of new development. Some other main attractions are the gigantic banyan (literally takes up an entire city block), the historic Baldwin House, the old courthouse, and the old prison. Add the wonderful scenery provided by being nestled between the West Maui mountain range and the waters of the Au’au Channel. Although free to visit, you will probably have to pay for parking.
Snorkeling
Aside from Molokini (a crescent-shaped, partially submerged volcanic crater), South Maui offers the best snorkeling from shore. South Maui offers a variety of excellent snorkeling locations that are home to a large variety of ocean life. In particular, Makena offers some great spots with two nature preserves; one fronting Makena Place and another called La Perouse Bay. Check out our best South Maui beaches.
