When is the Best Time to Visit Maui?

It’s Always a Good Time to Visit Maui

The great thing about visiting Maui is the weather is the same year round (except if you visit Haleakala/Upcountry in the winter)! So as far as the weather is concerned, visitors are always happy to know Maui’s warm tropical climate is pretty much consistent throughout the entire year. In the daytime, especially in South Maui, highs will hover around the mid to upper 80’s during the summer and the low 80’s in the winter, so in either season there is not much of a drastic difference.

Keep in mind, along the many coastal resorts at sea level, temperatures will be slightly cooler from the ocean breeze, rarely do they dip below 60°F during the coldest of winter. The only time Maui’s weather is undesirable is if a winter storm covers the island with clouds and rain, but those are infrequent and shouldn’t be of much concern.

Since we slightly grazed over the topic of rain, I might as well expand more on it. The majority of the rain Maui receives will fall in the tail end of Fall to the just about the beginning of Spring, so November through March is recognized as our “rainy” season. Rain showers are typically short and are quickly followed by more sunshine, and, if you’re lucky, rainbows. Rainbows are always said to be a sign of good luck in the islands, meaning you’ll return one day if you spot one.

Above we’ve included a graphic depicting average Maui temperatures to help you gauge what the weather will be like during your visit. Please remember that Maui’s geography causes drastic weather conditions based on the microclimate of each region of the island.

If you prefer to measure the best time to visit is in terms of best deals on accommodations, then spring and fall are your best bet because the numbers of visitors to the island is down which mean demand is also down. The island is less crowded as well, so that is a major benefit when visiting during these months. If you are trying to avoid higher prices then definitely do not come during the holidays, especially Christmas, you can typically expect large crowds of people – and prices will reflect the increased demand.

Many other visitors choose to visit Maui during the winter because they hope to catch glimpses of the creatures that call Maui home on a seasonal basis, the humpback whales. They sometimes arrive as early as November, but you can expect them to visit more around January – March as they migrate down from Alaskan waters. Here they mate, raise their calves, and birth their young. Maui has the best opportunities for whale watching in the entire state!
