Special 4th of July Events

The Lahaina Town Action Committee invites all to Front Street for an old-fashioned Independence Day celebration, listen to and enjoy a variety of bands play throughout Lahaina. Most importantly, a fireworks display lighting the night sky over Lahaina is scheduled for 8:00PM. The aerial show can be enjoyed from charter boats in Lahaina Harbor and on land throughout Lahaina Town. It is the only public fireworks display on Maui. The fundraising goal is $50,000 for the event and currently the committee is hard at work to raise these funds. When: Monday, July 4th. Jazz Maui is offering a free Concert in the Park on Monday, July 4 starting at 5:00PM pm on the lawn of the Lahaina Library. The event will boast the likes of the Maui Community Band, Chop Suey Jazz Band, Na Alii Big Band, Kukui Nuts barbershop quartet, and special guest vocalist Sheryl Renee.Jazz Maui has presented the free music at Lahaina’s Fourth of July celebration for more than 15 years now. Date: Monday, July 4th. Time: 5:00PM to 10:00PM. Where: Lahaina Library Lawn, Front Street, Lahaina

Queen Ka’ahumanu Center will hold their annual “Let’s Red, White and Pie Together”, an Independence Day weekend sidewalk sale and pie contest. Great prizes will be given away including: gift certificates from Aston-Aqua Hotels & Resorts, Macy’s and Queen Ka’ahumanu Center in both adult and keiki (under 18 years) categories. Toni Rojas, Director of Marketing is“Calling all bakers from keiki to kupuna, this one is for you!  Break out your family recipe or create your very own.” He also believes, “We have a wealth of culinary talent right here on Maui that hasn’t been discovered yet. We can’t wait to taste Maui’s-own recipes.” When: Friday, July 1 through Monday, July 4. Where: Queen Ka’ahumanu Center.

Family Fun

Makawao Town is proud to bring Maui the 51st Annual Makawao Parade. The Makawao community has organized to produced this Upcountry Community and Paniolo tradition with a Stick Horse Race at 8:30AM, for all ages and the Grand Paniolo Independence Day parade begins at 9:00AM. The theme for the parade is “Honoring our Heritage.” The Maui Veterans Council will march with a Color Guard to honor our country and heritage with Hawaiian Pa`u Riders participating to honor our cultural heritage. When: Saturday, July 2. When: 8:00AM. Where: Makawao Town.

The Iao Valley 10k is a great way to get the family outdoors and to enjoy the competitive spirit. Walk, run, or jog this course and it will for sure be a workout! There’s no better way to experience the mana (Hawaiian word for power) of Iao Valley; the wind blows a little cooler, the valley seems a little bigger, and the energy feels a little stronger, it’s a place certainly rich in ancient Hawaiian history. The 10k starts at the Wailuku Municipal Parking Lot off of Vineyard Street. Follows Vineyard Street up to Main Street and into scenic Iao Valley State Park and is a long rolling downhill back to Wailuku. When: Saturday, July 16th, 2016 from 7:30AM-9:00AM. More info: www.virr.com

The Arts & Culture

Art with Aloha: “Talk Story” and Demonstration with Umi & Leinaala Kai. Stop by the Hui No’eau on Baldwin Avenue and “talk story” with Umi Kai of Kai Kompany and Leinaala Kai of Ulupono Designs! Both are renowned for their knowledge in crafting traditional Hawaiian implements and weapons. Kumi and Leinaala encourage questions and are delighted to have guests watch them create some of their own work right at the Hui! This is event is a great opportunity to learn about making tools, weapons, and lauhala weaving from Native Hawaiian artists. When: Friday, July 15; 11:00AM–3:00PM. Where: Hui No`eau Visual Arts Center.

The Plantation Festival at Queen Kaahumanu Center will feature cultural booths displaying visual cultural education elements and an ethnic menu. Live entertainment will be a festival fashion show featuring traditional and contemporary cultural designs. A plantation history walk will display historical facts and photos, and for the keiki (kids), an art contest is scheduled and interactive plantation keiki games is scheduled. When: Saturday, July 23, 2016 from 9:30am – 2:30pm. Adult Fun

Join Ka’ana Kitchen for their monthly Cooking Class on Shellfish. The versatility of shellfish is a culinary marvel, so much can be done with the flavorful marine animal. Join them for their monthly class to learn a series of preparations for shellfish, as well as tips and tricks for purchasing local. When: Saturday, July 2. Time: 12:30PM-2:30PM. The MayJah RayJah Music Festival is Maui’s best concert all year! The annual island concert celebrates seven years as Hawaii’s “must-experience” music festival and  returns with an all-star lineup. The lineup includes national recording artists, J Boog, Iration, and international reggae superstar, Matisyahu. When: Friday, July 29, 2016 and Saturday, July 30, 2016. When: Gates open at 4:00PM, starts at 5:00PM. Tickets: $110/ GA two-day pass; $178/VIP two-day pass; $65/GA one-day pass; $100/VIP one day pas. Tickets are available through the Mayjah Rayjah website (www.tmrmusicfestival.com) now through Monday, July 18. Tickets will be available at the MACC Box office beginning Tuesday, July 19, at 10am.
