Maui Expansion Underway

The roadwork and expansion of the Kuihelani Highway has, so far, mainly served as a bypass from the more congested Dairy road. The signs to the airport are up but the continuation of the road stops before drivers can use the direct access route.

The Maui News reports that all of that is about to change. The Kahului airport is scheduled to undergo one of the largest restructuring of my lifetime. In the summer of 2016 the expanded, four lane continuation of the Kuihelani Hwy will open. This will become the formal entrance to the airport.

In addition to the entrance shift, there are plans for a 1.2 million square foot consolidated car rental facility planned for the 17-acre parcel between Costco gas station and the Kahului airport terminal. Once competed, the car rental building will house 7 car rental companies, approximately 3,000 cars and an electric tram to transport visitors between the structure and the airport. Construction on the car rental facility will begin as early as May of this year and will accompany the completion of a new cellphone parking lot.

Last year, about 3.1 million visitors passed through the doors of Kahului airport and the island is only becoming more popular place to visit. The expansion is geared at easing the speed at which visitors can land, grab their car and get to the beach.
