Defying Death: Pe’ahi Big Wave Challenge

Historic Pe’ahi Challenge

It’s only fitting at the first ever Pe’ahi Challenge a Maui native would be the first ever to receive the prestigious crown of the World Surf League sponsored event. Held at the world famous surf break just off Pauwela Point is Pe’ahi or more affectionally known as Jaws (because the waves will chew you up). It’s famed for its winter swells where the waves can reach upwards of sixty feet.

Two Maui natives made it one-two as Billy Kemper took #1, while Albee Layer took 2, and legendary big wave surfer Greg Long rounded out the top 3. Kemper and Layer have honed their craft surfing the waves at Jaws and having spent countless days at Pe’ahi must have made it extra sweet for the best friends to finish 1-2 at the event.

“This is a dream come true. I’m literally just blown away right now. This doesn’t even feel real. I just want to dedicate this to my brother; I wouldn’t be here without him,” Kemper told a WSL commentator right after the win.

Kai Lenny on an absolute monster of a wave

Young Gun, Kai Lenny made it to the semis but couldn’t squeeze out a win; no shame to him whatsoever. This finish only enhances his sterling reputation as one of the best all around water men. Kai is so talented, you see him competing at high levels across all water sports: stand up paddling (his best sport), kite boarding, wind surfing, surfing, and big wave surfing.

Pro surfer Dave Kalama went on to say before the final, “Whoever wins this is probably the best big-wave surfer in the world.”

Wave faces were exceeding heights of 55 feet while surfers hitting speeds up to 50 mph. Wave heights had strict requirements to ensure that waves were of massive proportions. Most notably, the surfing style at Jaws is tow in which means surfers are helped by jet skis to pull them into the wave. This competition however, required the surfers to paddle  into the waves, something that only adds to the skill level required to compete at the elite level.

Stunning Sayles Team Haiku Listing: 60 Koolau Place

pic_589410.65060 Ko’olau Road is a sweet estate located a few minutes from 5 corners with easy access to Hana Highway and is also just 10 minutes to Jaws or Pe’ahi. It’s a true Haiku gem: a large plantation style home with emphasis on utilizing cool outdoor spaces and embracing the Haiku jungle. We listed the property at $1,295,000 and feel that it falls nicely into the $1.3 million Haiku inventory and is competitively priced.

The Haiku real estate market is currently weighted toward the high end with 60% of the inventory currently listed over $1m. It would seem that Buyers for that price point would have the advantage of a broad selection but while there are several properties for sale, the quality of the homes varies dramatically. 60 Koolau breaks away from the pack with its impeccable construction, quality building materials and enchanting grounds. At $411 per square foot, 60 Koolau is in the lowest 10 properties currently listed. Competitive price and meticulous maintenance make 60 Koolau an incredible value for the North Shore market.

pic_589373.650The sound of a trickling waterfall over a pool of water lilies greets you as you approach the entrance to this Haiku oasis. The chef’s kitchen offers enough space to whip up exotic culinary creations while still enjoying the company of friends and family. The master suite is on the opposite end of the home making it the perfect retreat at the end of the day. The main home has the welcoming flow of single level living with a special attention to features for entertaining. An easy walk up the stone path takes you to the tiki hot tub hale and separate structure currently used as a gym, brewery and workshop. This property is a pleasure to show and must be experienced.

The detail and care that has gone into the propeIMG_5094rty at 60 Koolau transends the camera lens. It must be experienced to be appreciated. The single level floor plan is an entertainers delight with covered lanai, chef’s kitchen and covered outdoor BBQ/smoker. The covered lanai makes the perfect area for eating fresh star fruit or hanging banana’s right outside the door. The property has an unbelievable amount of beautiful flora, like beautiful and deep colorful hibiscus.
