September Calendar of Events

Family Fun

The 7th Annual Tilapia Fishing Tournament will be held from 7:30 to 9 a.m. on Sunday, September 27, 2015 at the Kā‘anapali Golf Course Pond. Registration forms for the event are available at the Maui Electric Customer Service Lobby, New Maui Fishing Supply, Maui Sporting Goods, Kā‘anapali Golf Course Logo Shop, and online at the company’s website. The event is open to the public but participants must be between the ages of two and 18, for a registration fee of $20 per participant.

Maui’s most anticipated event will return for its 93rd year providing the welcome transition into fall and also marks roughly the 3/4 mark of 2015! The 93rd Maui Fair rolls in on September 24, 25, 26 & 27 instead of the usual October dates that we are accustom to. As usual the Fair will open with the traditional parade, which is also Maui’s largest, on Thursday, September 24, and will continue with rides, food, entertainment and more through the evening of Sunday, September 27, 2015.

Lahaina hosts the celebration of the island’s agricultural harvest during a traditional Chinese Moon Festival at Wo Hing Museum on Front Street, Lahaina from 1:00 to 8:00 pm on Friday and Saturday. Browse the Farmers’ market in the Wo Hing Museum yard, taste Chinese tea and moon cakes, experience an erhu performance, a fan dance and community lantern dance between. Make your own craft activities like calligraphy, lantern making, and a planting workshop. Traditional Chinese dishes will also be available.

Adults’ Night Out

Hope Fest Maui was created by a group of volunteers and sponsors for the benefit of Maui residents and also its visitors. Hope Fest will feature an afternoon to evening concert on Saturday with acclaimed musical and performance acts. V.I.P.s, sponsors and honored guests will celebrate the inaugural event on Friday night with an invitation-only reception and silent auction. Open to public event is held the next day, read following for details. Date: Saturday, September 19th, 2015. Time: 2:00 pm to 10:00 pm Cost: $35, $75. The venue will be the newly completed Maui Brewing Kihei location in the Maui Tech Park.

Maybe not a night out, but certainly an event to not miss out on! Tee off with some of the most celebrated celebrity chefs, winemakers and golf pros at the 18th Annual Roy’s Golf Classic.  Now partnered up with the Hawai‘i Food & Wine Festival Kā‘anapali, the Roy’s Golf Classic will boast gourmet food, ice cold beer, and tasty cocktails throughout the course (I wouldn’t have it any other way). The 19th hole will feature a dinner prepared by Roy’s Kaanapali. Space is limited to 138 players. Held at the Ka’anapali Golf Course starting at 10:00 AM on Friday, September 4th.

Arts & Culture

The Japanese Cultural Society of Maui will be holding its annual clean up at the Japanese Gardens at the Kepaniwai Park & Heritage Gardens in Iao Valley on Saturday, September 12, from 9:00 am to noon. President Shinkai Murakami said, “This is a way to show our appreciation and to pay tribute to our ancestors.” The club asks for those who plan to attend to bring their own garden tools (a pool skimmer would be helpful), gloves, hat and sunscreen. A complimentary lunch and drinks will be served to all volunteers following the service project. To RSVP, contact Priscilla Yamamura at 283-4253 by September 9.

As we increasingly become a globalized world, it’s important to have some grasp of the other cultures around us. The film, Upaj: Improvise, is a great chance to look behind the scenes and watch the birth and road to success of India Jazz Suites, an East-meets-West collaboration featuring Indian kathak master and guru, Pandit Chitresh Das, and tap star, Jason Samuels Smith. At the screening there will be a live demonstration of kathak dance and a discussion with filmmaker and member of the Chitresh Das Dance Company, Antara Bhardwaj.
