Maui’s Finest Japanese Cuisine: Morimoto Maui

Maui’s Gem: Morimoto Maui

If you’re like me and enjoy the Food Network’s Iron Chef and Iron Chef America tv shows, and have always wondered how good they actually are then it’s your luck day. Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto has now brought his trade to Maui and operates an outpost out of the luxurious Andaz Hotel in Wailea, the restaurant does not disappoint. The restaurant design mirrors Mormimoto’s cooking style: modern, dynamic, and pristine. But lets be real, the true reason you want to come here is to experience the Morimoto cooking philosophy and techniques for yourself.

Celebrity chef Masaharu Morimoto is best known for his role on Iron Chef where he displays his wonderful skill set and showcases the repertoire he has at his disposal. His design of the menu is deliberate and calculated, it blends Japanese and western ingredients to create innovative dishes while still staying grounded in his Japanese roots. Morimoto is not only extremely competent in preparing Japanese dishes with touches of his own flair but he is also a world class sushi chef with a sterling reputation.

The menu is divided into cold appetizers, hot appetizers, salads, soups & noodles, raw bar, entrees, steaks, sides, sushi/sashimi, and maki.

Morimoto’s signature crispy rock shrimp tempura with a spicy cream sauce and his unforgettable ode to duck, an oft-changing trio that might include duck confit fried rice and frozen foie gras. The tuna pizza is a must, the fresh fish, prime steak, and lobster dishes are big enough to share, and just one bite will have you dreaming about the the 10-hour braised pork belly in rice congee.

The restaurant has a max capacity of 138 teakwood seats available and compliments nicely the black-stone tile interior dining area. A captivating outdoor terrace, plus a neat bar complete the restaurant with the best part being: every area has a beach or ocean view, so there’s really no bad table in the place.

Morimoto’s is housed in the lower level of the Andaz, below the cascading swimming pools. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner, while the sushi bar is also open in the mid-afternoon. Serious Morimoto goers should make reservations.
