Tedeschi Winery at Ulupalakua Ranch

Maui’s Solo Winery at Ulupalakua Ranch

Since 1974, the Tedeschi Winery has been operating on Maui and is the only active winery on the island. One thing is for sure, you’ve never graced anywhere quite like MauiWine, nestled on the southern slopes of Ulupalakua. Their vines are rooted in the history of Maui, and their wines tell a big part of their story as a community that has called Ulupalakua its home for generations. Touring the winery and its people is a cultural experience, and the wine leaves a lasting impression!

Pardee Erdman, owner of Ulupalakua Ranch, and Emil Tedeschi, a wine maker with a rich history of winemaking in Calistoga, California struck a deal to bring a unique venture to the Valley Isle. Their bond was formed over their ownership of rich volcanic land and the desire of know-how to work it into something outstanding. Their partnership identified the ideal growing location for the vines and also repurposed some existing buildings of the former Rose Ranch estate to be fit for winemaking.

Currently, their winery is built around these historic buildings. Just down the road is 23 acres of lush Maui countryside, home to their vineyard. This winery as mentioned is located in he Upcountry area of Maui, specifically Ulupalakua. The area is known for humungous pastures of horses, cattle, and an abundance of livestock. The area is defining to Maui’s history, agricultural, and colonial background. Tedeschi Winery and Ulupalakua ranch pride themselves as being “stewards of the land,” and are strong supporters of sustainability and thriving agriculture.

In the late 1980s, Tedeschi felt it was time for a change and decided to leave Maui in favor of a return home to California. The reigns of the business operations fell to Paula Hegele where she also continues today. Under her guidance, they have continued to perfect their products and expand to 18 states and four countries around the globe. They also continue to develop other aspects of their business. They offer the winery tour experience, which offers tastings in the King’s Cottage and Old Jail, visits to the vineyard, and private events.

Following their innovations, the Tedeschi Winery and Ulupalakua Ranch were successful in cultivating grape crops. During their process, their trademark idea was hatched. A few of their wines were designed around popular fruit in Hawaii. Since then, Tedeschi Winery has been most widely regarded for their famous Pineapple Sparkling wine called the “Maui Brut Sparkling.” In the winery’s repertoire are various tropical fruit concoctions that have added to their growing reputation. They also produce beautiful and more traditional Maui wines including: Ulupalakua Red (a blend of Syrah, Merlot and Malbec), Upcountry Gold (a Chardonnay aged in stainless steel), and Lokelani (an elegant sparkling Rose with hints of vanilla and orange blossom).
